Looking for Reseller account however with a catch!
Posted by Skelaniya, 03-22-2006, 06:47 PM |
Hello everyone,
I'm looking for a second reseller account and I was just wondering whether the following is possible:
I currently have a reseller account with host1 for mydomain.com with private nameservers as ns1&ns2.mydomain.com. Now I'm looking for a 2nd reseller account from a new host (lets call it host2).
With host2 I want to have nameservers as ns3&ns4.mydomain.com, is this possible? how? and is their any disadvantages buy doing this?
Thanks in advance

yes it is possible just point them to the host 2 ip address and it should not be a problem

It is possible, why not get a 2nd reseller account with the same host?
You would register the 2nd set of name servers at your registrar with the 2 ip addresses given by your 2nd host, they will set them up for you.

Yep can do that - just need to add the new nameservers with your registrar to point to the new ip addresses

I'm not satisfied their services anymore
Thanks for the explanation. Since the domain is originally hosted at host1 do I have to create any A records etc at host1 for host2 have ns3&ns4.mydomain.com? or the only thing I have to do this just to add the 2 IPs for ns3&ns4.mydomain.com at the registrar?

Sounds like you know exactly what needs to be done now. Any further questions would be handled by any reputable host to get you started and swapped over.

No, you are incorrect, you should create A records at the other host's DNS server. This is not too hard to do, though.

yes but wouldnt both ways work?
and having it at the registrar would prevent downtime on both if the main server went down
or am i wrong here... i have never setup any of my servers like this

You need to register the name servers at your domain register and point them to your 2nd reseller accounts IPs. Then where you have the main domain hosted you will need to add A records for the new name servers.
Example: ns3 14400 A IP Address
Then when you type the name servers in your browser they will show a page instead of a page not found.
Its only a 10 minute process and quite easy to do.

This is probably a very bad practice as if the if the server with the A record goes down so will all the sites at host2.
So my question is: Is this really necessarily create A records or can I just setup the nameserver at the register?

If i was in your situation i would do it at the registrar ...
point the ns3 and ns4 to the new server and be done with it

But WN-Ali (WireNine.com) confirmed that this is possible without creating A record and my current host confirmed that this is possible A records, all you have to do is add the IP at the register for the host2.
Now you and elix say that I need A records?

You are going to need A records for the name servers to work 100% correctly. They will work if you just point them to an IP, but who knows what issues might arise. Once you get it setup I would check a domain using the new name servers at: http://www.dnsreport.com/

As long as you point the 2 nameservers to "host2" and add their respective A Entries on the server it will work perfectly, without a glitch.

I would recommend doing both. Declare your nameservers at the registrar. Create A records for ns3,ns4 in the zone file of mydomain.com at reseller account1.
