Hard drive problem
Posted by bbrog, 02-14-2012, 12:40 PM |
Hi, we just recently replaced a hard drive on our raid1 setup.
We started syncing data onto the new drive and we come back 5 minutes later and it says formatting failed what does this mean? (had a 3rd party server management company do this for us)
Also now when booting the server it goes straight to bios.
Please do let me know.
Thanks!

Is this HW or SW RAID?
"Syncing" doesn't involve formatting unless the RAID CTL do some kind of low-level format prior to online the drive & resync the array.
What does your 'server management company' has to say about this? Or they don't know?

They dont know, this is a software raid.
Hopefully no data was lost, I did notice that my sites stopped connecting to the database and then all my sites went offline. And now it stays at the bios screen when booted.

If your provider can't do the most basic of tasks you should consider ditching them for someone else. Rebuilding a software raid array can be done in under a minute and doesnt involve any formatting.
If your server doesnt boot it sounds like they have tried to format something, hopefully not your boot drive! I suggest finding someone who knows what they are doing to sort this out.

I'm going to assume you are working with Linux SW RAID (mdadm) here.
Resync process does not involve 'format' at all since it's block level handled by OS. Not sure what they did but you need to ask them the exact steps they performed on this 'resync'. Without knowing this, it's difficult to help you at this point.
I hope you have backups...

Thanks, I will ask them.
The drives are no longer even showing up in the bios. What can this mean?

Have the NOC hand recheck the drive bus and power cables. They might've butterfingered and knock it off.
If not, both drives may be bad, it's not impossible for it to happen.

Hi, now im getting an error
ata3qc timeout
ata3 device not ready
ata3 failed to indentify i/o error
ata3 failed to recover some devices.
This happenes during boot and keeps on going and just never lets the server boot up.
One of the drives was checked yesterday and it was fine.
Do let me know thanks!

Did you took my last post suggestions and had them done?
One other possibility is they replaced the wrong drive. Meaning they replaced the good drive with a blank drive and 1) resync from bad drive to the blank (if bad wasn't a complete but impending failure) 2) they don't know to to resync and BIOS boot order was messed up.
