CSF causing issues on high usage on my servers

I have a couple of high traffic mid rage spec servers that run CSF and it seems to be causing lots of issues. Apache has been dropping out at peak times for a while yet the configuration and everything seems fine, disabling CSF appears to fix this. This morning my server was down for a few hours, I contacted the datacentre and they initially thought my server was under a SYN flood attack, turned out to be a firewall error that was fixed by a simple reboot. I have also noticed that CSF seriously degrades server bandwidth throughput when there is more than a handful of ip’s in the ip deny list. If you have it automatically block suspicious IPs and the deny list grows over a few hundred you can watch your bandwidth graphs shrink. I only really use CSF to block ports (or specifically, to block all ports and open up specifc ports). I have already turned off about half of the intrusion detection functions and other stuff. is there any other solutions to using CSF that won’t cause as many server issues as CSF appears to be? PS I can’t really afford a hardware firewall for each of my servers.

Is it installed and configurated correctly?
