SMTP Server Problem

Posted by iTom, 04-21-2009, 05:31 AM
Hi Everyone, Everytime I send an email from my out look or on the webmail I get the following error, its on my small vps running cpanel. I have already re installed the mail server, installed a diffrent mail server, and also gone in the config and took this out in whm with no joy. Any ideas? Thanks,

Hi Do you have access to the mail log (/var/log/maillog) to see what errors are thrown up there? or is that where you got that error from? ___________________ Robert Charlton Technical Operations DecisiveServers.com

If its happening every time, in Outlook make sure you have authentication turned ON for the outgoing mail. Go into the advanced settings and for the outgoing server, and check "Outgoing server requires authentication, use same settings as incoming server" Another thing to check is that your hostname has no invalid characters. If this does not resolve the issue please paste the entire outlook error. You probably got lazy because you cannot copy error with mouse click. Highlight the outlook error message and use ctrl-c to copy message to clipboard then paste here. I am looking for the error number.

Set the servers hostname Use it's FQDN. hostname myserver.domain.com Then restart your mail server (sendmail, whatever)

Hi Login to CPanel (as root) assuming you own the VPS go to exim configuration and look for the RFC 4.1.1.1 text and turn it off, the restart exim, and that will stop the error. Thanks

Please enable the option "My SMTP server requires authentication" in the mail client settings and give it a try.

Remove the mail server that you installed and update the default mail server that comes with cPanel ie exim. /scripts/eximup --force

nuke13, Did you try that? It should resolve the issue. You can try creating a new email account in the following way and test it out. 1. Start up Outlook, then click on Tools, then E-mail Accounts 2. Click on 'Add a new e-mail account', then click Next 3. Click on 'POP3', then click Next 4. Fill in the fields for your e-mail settings, using the following as an example: - Your Name: nuke - E-mail Address: nuke13@yourdomain.com - Incoming mail server: mail.yourdomain.com - Outgoing mail server: mail.yourdomain.com - User name (same as your e-mail address): jdoe@yourdomain.com - Password 5. Click on More Settings, and a new window displays 6. Click on the Outgoing Server tab 7. Click on the 'My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication', then click OK 8. Click on 'Test Account Settings'; 9. If successful click Close, then Next, then Finish

I know this is an old thread, but I was looking all over the net for a solution for this and didn't find it. So I found it on my own. And here it is, for others with the same problem (root access required): 1) Log into WHM with root 2) Go to Exim Configuration Manager 3) Change "Reject SPF failures" and "Require clients to connect with SSL or issue the STARTTLS command before they are allowed to authenticate with the server" to the default (Off). 4) Save and restart Exim. That solved the problem for me. Hope it can help others.

Gee PattyO. Its been three years. I bet post #3 is the right answer

It was not. Not in this case. I tried that too. I posted what worked for me and I couldn't find anywhere, so it might help somebody else looking for the same answer I was. Better late than never.

Do you have installed mail server correctly? Such as settip up SMTP, incoming mail, outgoing, and another configuration?

Posted by PattyO, 05-08-2012, 11:25 PM
Guys, everything was configured correctly. I checked it over and over again. It was just the regular configuration that most everyone uses. The problem was not on the client's side, it was on the server's side due to that configuration. If those two are marked ON, then secure ports should be used in the mail client. Which was not the case. If you want to use port 25, you need to have those secure options marked Off.
