Server Freeze Up Under Load

I'm having a problem with my centOS server. During high load the system became non-responsive, I couldn't connect via ssh or http, but it responded to ping.
It's Quad Core E3-1220 with 8GB RAM. Please help me.
Here is dmesg output:

50 is obviously a very high load. It's quite possibly the load was high due to massive disk I/O.
What exactly were you expecting to happen under a high load situation? If your disk is thrashing, even things like SSH will start to respond very slowly.
You will always get a response to ping as this does not rely on any disk access (and it's all in the in-memory kernel).
