Reverse Proxy

Posted by HostFriendly, 09-23-2012, 05:49 AM
Hi, If we use nginx installed , server(Gbps uplink) as reverse proxy, Would users feel any considerable latency? And another question is, Should reverse proxy server have the CPU/RAM configuration as the main server ? Or reverse proxy servers dont need to be as powerfull as the main server ? Regards.

Depends on your nginx and network setup. If your nginx reverse proxy don't cache and is located in an other facility you will feel the higher latency. (depends on geographical distance). Due to the fact that your frotend (nginx reverse proxy) do not execute any scripts (*.php) this server will need much less cpu/memory.

Most nginx reverse proxies should be able to operate on 2GB of RAM and very low CPU. It is not a resource intensive application.

It depends on geographical distance. You will get higher latency if the reverse proxy server is located at other facility. Nginx reverse proxies is not resource consuming application. 2 GB RAM with low CPU will be enough.

Hmm, i got the idea. Thanks very much. Regards.

nginx is not resource-intensive as it was mentioned above. If you'll run nginx with built-in caching enabled please make sure you have sufficient HDD space. I also wonder why a separate hardware proxy is necessary? Normally you can run both a web server and a reverse proxy on a single box.

I recommend running the reverse proxy (nginx) on the same server as the web server, unless you have a really strong reason not to do so.

Hi, But i espacially need it for ddos protection. Also please tell me, is file caching recomended or not ? Can it couse non-fresh content in the sites ? Means when people make some changes in their templates, so they will need to wait for a while to see the difference ?

It can be used for DDoS protection, just make sure the specific attack they are using will be mitigated by your setup. Also remember if you do start to mitigate the attack they may change methods. The caching time is something you can configure within nginx.

hi, Can you elaborate this part ? You mean only specific type of ddos attacks can be mitigated ? If so, i have heard something like this before also, but dont know what types can be mitigated, and what types can not be.
