Load Spikes
Posted by ouwejan, 06-01-2012, 10:00 AM |
Hi,
We're having one VPS which occasionally (especially during the night) is having load spikes.. We suspect this has something to do with IO wait, as these spikes match the load spikes. However, as we're not really getting any help from our VPS provider and our server management can't really pinpoint either, we hope to hear some of your thoughts on this. Could the IO wait be caused on the main VPS node, or should we search the problem on our box? We do run (rsync) backups each night, however the time frame doesn't seem to match the load spikes exactly.
Thanks

What virtualization layer your vps is running on? Because, if you're sure that the high I/O is not occurring when your rsync jobs are being performed, then the issue may be with the host server where your vps resides. (oversell-ed or doing some I/O intensive operations)
Anyhow, it is best to monitor the resource usage during that period, by using top, iotop, ps etc... so you can know if there isn't something else which is causing those load spikes.

Please check IO for your vps is high. You can check it using the command
# iostat 2
Also check the network traffic for the VPS during the mentioned time.

Hi Guys,
The VPS is running on Xen. We will continue to be monitoring using the tools you mentioned, however we couldn't really spot issues till now. Also the network traffic seems normal during the spikes.

Did you ever find a solution to this problem?

We eventually migrated to a dedicated box ;-)

Are you happy with the performance on dedicated server OR are you still facing similar problems like VPS?
Have you tried running tools mentioned earlier to find out exact issue for high I/O on VPS before switching to dedicated server?

One of our customers experienced a similar issue. In our case it was fixed by a RAM upgrade.

Yes, we are very happy with the performance of the dedicated server. Load almost never passes 1.0 now
We did try running the mentioned tools, however not much information was gathered. We could only see a very slow IO speed.
