How much r1soft space?

Hey everyone! I was confused about R1Soft and how much space I should get. It is relatively costly, at about $299/month for 1tb space (if I get it from netelligent) Now, lets say I had 4x 600gb SAS drives in RAID10 (so I had 1.2tb space), how much R1Soft space would I need? Also, what is the mysql plugin used for? Finally, how does r1soft work in the case of hosting providers. Do you offer the service to your clients, or is it only used by the hosting company to backup the server? ex. If i had 1tb hdd, and 10clients using 50gb each (for a total of 500gb/1tb used), how much space of R1Soft should I get, and do I (the hosting company) back up the server as a whole, or do i give it to the clients to backup themselves? Are there any alternatives, and have r1soft cleaned up their act? Thanks, and sorry about these questions!

Actually, it all depends on the amount of data you backup and how many recovery points you keep. It works on incremental backups, so all depends on how often and how much of your data is changing. Also, if you choose compressed backup then you will require even less space. As per my view, 1 TB space will be enough for you.

mySql plugin is for backing up your MySQL databases. In addition to have r1soft backed up the server, you can have r1soft to back up MySQL databases separately. r1soft is not just for hosting providers. They have a version for enterprises that would like to back up their servers. In terms of backup space needed, BestServerSupport has given a pretty good answer to that. Whether you as a hosting company back up the server as a whole or you let the client to DIY is really up to what kind of services you are providing.

What you can do is set your backup policy to keep X amount of recovery points, if you get close to filling up your backup space you can always merge the recovery points freeing up space. We normally tell people to get backup space that is 20% - 50% more than the disk space used on their server so they have ample room to keep multiple restore points. I'm not sure what type of hosting you're doing but there are a few different ways. For cPanel hosting you can use the cPanel plugin which allows your end-users to access their own backups. They can then restore their own files without contacting you (does not include MySQL). If they need a MySQL database restored you would have to do it for them. While the software backs up everything including the MySQL directory the MySQL plugin allows for a safer way of backing up the databases as just backing up the files can cause some minor corruption. Regarding cleaning up their act, the latest version 5.x is much better than the previous versions which were plagued with issues. They are making progress, albeit slowly. At this time all the 'show stopping' issues have been resolved and the core software works fine without issue. They are of course still fixing minor items and improving overall efficiency. For alternatives, there is a myriad of options when it comes to backups. In the hosting industry, I think the other alternative that is widely used would be 'bacula4hosts'. I believe they have an advertising thread in the backup offer section of this forum.

R1 soft is a Bare Metal backup solution. Now R1 soft is known as Idera. Its very efficient and reliable backup solution than any backup service. It is expensive backup system but we all know how important backups are when you have thousands of web sites of your clients with their important data on your servers. You can restore your crashed server within few hours if you have R1 soft backup and bring it back online to its original state. Specific files of web sites can also be restored easily. The backups are stored in the form of Restore Points so the space consumed is the space consumed by Recovery points. There is no such limit on disk space to backup but its your backup server which should have sufficient disk capacity to store recovery points of your servers. If you have only few servers say 1 - 2 then you can keep multiple recovery points or if you have many servers then you can keep 1 recover point which is all depends on your requirement. You can integrate R1 Soft in your WHM as well to provide backup service to your clients to backup their individual cPanel accounts. You need a MySQL Agent add-on license for MySQL module and then you can activate it under "About" button. Here is a user guide on MySQL addon in CDP : http://wiki.r1soft.com/display/R1D/C...SQL+User+Guide

We use Idera for all our clients at work.. it backups up domain controllers, terminal servers, exchange servers, application servers, you name it.. works great. With high zlib compression, we are averaging about 1.5GB of data compressed down to 1GB.. but with retention it adds up.. so I would say 175% of your current usage..
