Affordable DDOS Protection for Game Servers?

Posted by Think Tank Networks, 07-13-2013, 03:45 PM
I run a small gaming community and the past 5 months one of my game servers has been getting hit by DOS/DDOS attacks. At first they occurred weekly, then a few times a week, then daily and now several times daily. The attack peaked on July 12th with 1 Gigabyte per second. My datacenter nullrouted the IP because it was affecting other customers. My datacenter also told me it was a UDP flood attack. I'm now faced with 2 options, DDOS protection or shutting down my gaming community and game servers. I would like to get DDOS protection if i could, but there are a few factors that are preventing this from happening: 1) The price. I can't afford $500 each month for DDOS protection. The most i can afford is $100. 2) The game servers i use mostly use UDP ports. So the DDOS protection should allow them. I do have details about the size of the UDP packets so the DDOS protection will be able to figure out valid UDP traffic from invalid UDP traffic. 3) Latency. Unlike web servers, game servers must have as low latency as possible. Even a second off can have extremely negative results. My game server is located in Montreal, Canada so any IP tunneling services must be located in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto or any other area as close as possible. Moving my game server to a datacenter close to the DDOS protection isin't an option either since i own the server and i dont want to deal with long distance repairs when/if it breaks down. Can anyone help me with this? P.S. I looked into Zen Protection, but they charge $500 each month and it blocks all UDP traffic. P.S.S. The attack doesnt happen all day; they last anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours. So i dont need 24/7 protection. I just need protection that "kicks in" when a DDOS is detected. is the attack coming from one main source or is it like 100s?

Datacenter wasnt sure but it is a DDOS attack so it is multiple sources.

Are you looking for DDoS protection on a VPS or Dedicated Server?

It's a Colocated server but im not willing to move it because i dont want to deal with long distance repairs if/when it breaks down. Also, im getting an incredible deal with my datacenter because im a long time customer (its a mid-tower server and im paying the same price as a 1U server which is a savings of around $30 per month).

There's no other way unless you host it and protect it on-site. UDP attacks are the largest counted in packets per second ddos attacks. Therefore it's not possible to protect you from UDP attacks by using a proxy tunnel and avoid significate latency increase, lags etc. Just keep that in mind because if your players get lags this might lead to lost customer base. We would recommend to look for on-site protection and move or copy your game server to a safe place.
