No SSL for cPanel?

Posted by ThinkPadUser, 07-07-2013, 09:27 PM
So, if I were to sign up for a shared hosting service, and not purchase SSL for my website, won't my cPanel be insecure? So people with packet sniffers could see my cPanel password? How about web mail? Could packet sniffers read the e-mails being transmitted from the mail server to a desktop mail client? I'm knowledgeable in the field of SSL, and the related.

Hello you don't need to go to either: https://sharedserverip:2083 https://hostname.com:2083 Emails: same but port 2096 You can find these in the shared hosting control panel if it's cPanel that is. Even if your host doesn't have SSL as long as you use the https:// you should be fine.

Thank you for your reply! I tested that with 1FreeHosting, and that did not work. Is that because it is a low end host? I even tried it without the "s" at the end of "http", and that did not work, either. So, when you say it will work even if my host doesn't have SSL, do you mean SSL for my domain, or root/shared SSL?

SSL will still work you will just get a warning when connecting.

Unless your host disable the secure connection.

I am pretty sure that cpanel is ssl secure. The reason you get a warning is because they intentionally don't sign the certificate. This is to put people off who stumble across your cpanel, they see the warning about an untrusted connection and leave. If you click on the padlock it tells you that the owner is unkown as they havent signed but underneath it says it uses high grade encryption. Last edited by donald22; 07-08-2013 at 03:24 AM.

In a shared hosting environment, the SSL connectivity has to be configured by the provider. And it would apply to every hosting account on the server, as cPanel access is the same. Even without the provider purchasing an SSL cert, a self-sign cert can still be enabled. If this does not work: https://hostname.com:2083, it means that the provider has disabled it. You may want to contact them if they can enable it.

If you are unable to login to cPanel/WHM via http://yourip:2083 OR in webmail via http://yourip:2096 then you need to contact your hosting provider.

The SSL protocol still works, its just that the server is not signed by a third-party certificate provider like GeoTrust, Thwate etc. Your connection is still secure, but there is no third-party or broker to authenticate that it is a secured server to which you are trying to communicate.

I was chatting with a potential future paid host, and they said that the cPanel/webmail login along with the mail server is secured with SSL. Is that standard for paid web hosts?

I would think so. Most would probably use self signed certs. Really hard to say for sure without having tested / used many different hosts.

I tested it with x10 free hosting, and it worked. It must just be 1FreeHosting.

While there is no industry-standard to my knowledge, I would personally prefer a SSL certified one as it really doesn't cost too much these days and it would indicate to me that the host is not cutting corners. Just my 2cents

Let me reword that question - Do most reputable paid hosts provide SSL?
