How to minimize the downtime during a transfer process
Posted by RHostingMX, 01-14-2010, 12:15 PM |
Hi there all my dear friends of WHT
Well I like to ask to the experts, how I can minimize the transfer/migration process when you switch from one hosting provider to another.
I mean I'm going to switch of hosting provider and I like to know how I can move my domains to the new server with the minimal downtime, I like to know how I can work with the DNS propagation and how to prepare the new host or the domains to deal with this process.
Is there a right way to do this?
Is it possible to minimize the DNS propagation time?
Is it possible to minimize the downtime process during the DNS propagation?
I really appreciate all your information and support.
Thanks in advance,
Rodrigo Castillo

It's pretty much a four step process:
1.) Backup your data with your old web host
2.) Restore your backup with your new web host
3.) Double check to ensure that all of your files, scripts, images, etc. are working fine with the new host
4.) Change your domain nameservers with your registrar

If you have root access to both servers, you can have as little as a few minutes downtime for DNS Propagation.
Otherwise, as Rick pointed out, backup your data, restore it on your new server, but BEFORE changing Nameservers, I'd recommend you look at the DNS records of every one of your domains and change them to point from the Old IP to the New IP. Then change your nameservers at your registrar.
That way, when visitors are still viewing the old server, they'll be forwarded to the new IP because of the changed DNS records.

Alright, Get you new server up or running and transfer everything you have on your main account to the new server, Then after all this switch domain name servers and done. You should see no downtime just dont delete the old server account and leave it up for about 5 days after the transfered domain name servers kick in then dispatch a email to your clients and tell them to clear the cookies and history also cache on there computers or phones and whala it should be done and transfered.
Please note that it takes about 72 hours for the domain to transfer** 72 hours is two (2) days.

Propagation will still affect people
And 72 hours is 3 days...
48 hours is 2 days

1. If you can, change the TTL in your DNS zone files to a minute. Restart named.
2. Then wait a few hours, more than what the old TTL was.
3. Then change the ip address in the zone files. Restart named.
4. Its then best to suspend the account on the old server so that no file changes occur.
5. Then run the backup program.
6. Transfer the backup to the new server which can usually be done server to server.
7. Then run the restore.
8. Change the nameservers at the registrar.
When done properly downtime will be only as long as it takes to make the backup, transfer the files and run the restore.
If file changes such as email and database changes are not important then you can reduce the time by not suspending the account and doing the backup stuff before changing the ip address in the zone files.
Many hosts will do all of this for you at no extra charge or at least they should.

You can test everything out on the new site by accessing your temporary URL such as http://hostname.provider.com/~cpuser
When everything is looking great, just update your DNS servers and you're done.

Please note that most reseller providers would be willing to do this all for you free of charge
