PrestonHost: Stay Away (1 month review)

Posted by SteeLeR, 06-19-2010, 12:21 AM
Hello, Before you read what follows, I want to say that English is not my native language. I hope that no misunderstandings occur because of this. I rented the plan "MR1" in the Florida server via this link (edit: this link, sorry). As soon as I activated the account, were very friendly and fast in the first support tickets that I sent. But your server at that time was troubled time out, I preferred to wait for them to fix the next day anyway because I would go to bed. The opposite happened to the days following, each time I try to make changes at WHM was slow and showing timeouts. Even many of his customers complained that the server was overloaded memories. I submited a ticket of this asking move my (empty) account to another node. In short, they refused and wanted me to believe that everything was fine. I got tired of demanding and lose my time, and preferred to wait. Then, they install new rams and hard drive (virtual because the node where he was clearly a vps) and after a few reboots and the "isolation of an account that was overloading the CPU", the server became more responsive. But that was after a few weeks from first payment, because the first three weeks I spent with them had to lidear every day with the slow server, and for that reason I chose not to put any website or my or my clients for fear of anything could happen. One day I realized that he had allocated only 20GB of the 500GB monthly transfer they offered me. I was going to open a ticket the next day, but MySQL (so WHMCS also) was down and as I read their server in Los Angeles was having problems too. I had to wait almost two days to ask about that, but guess what?, my account showed no such data now. I decided to request SSH access to that offered in the ad that prompted that chose them. What do you think happened, guys?, They do not want to give. Tired, frustrated and disappointed by all the problems they gave me (I had to buy another auxiliar account at another hosting), I requested a refund, that really make sense because they didn't give me what they offered and the poor service I experienced. They said me no. (They hide behind their TOS, because they limit refunds to only three days after). Oversold servers, support is not resolute, constant crashes. I had a really bad time with them. I thought maybe for the price it cost deserved a trial, but the headaches I went through, I don't recommend it, Not even worth it. I hope what you have written makes sense. Best Regards. Thank you. Now I'm royalehost, although it seems a small business and offer services at relatively low costs, have given me no problems. They have good support (not 24/7), but they worry a lot. Perhaps after a month with they I would write a review of them. I will report the domain that was hosted, anyways now does not point to prestonhost servers. Please tell me who I have to show it

I realized that I posted in wrong place. This should be on Reseller Hosting Forum. My apologies.

Let's wait to hear from Prestonhost's side before we jump into conclusions. Right now I don't know what's really going on but from what I can understand the host was just going by their terms of service, which the client did agree to upon signup. And there's also nothing wrong with being hosted on a VPS as long as the host maintains a good server load.

Posted by SteeLeR, 06-19-2010, 01:08 AM
That is the problem, the server load I have mentioned.

Posted by Faris Aziz, 06-19-2010, 01:38 AM
Hello, Thank you for your honest review. We will make the changes to improved our services in future but I have a few things to clarify to you because some things you said are not always true. I am Faris, a representative from PrestonHost.com came to clarify this review. Server Slow & Downtime Issues Yes what you said are true. We have a lot of issues with our Florida server this month like downtime as this server is full but I went to advertise Florida server instead of Asheville. We have no problems with our Asheville server but if you were to look at our plans, we are offering 50GB HDD for Florida and 5GB HDD for Asheville at the same price; so I bet you know what is overselling and what is not. Asheville is a brand new server and Florida is an old server but we just do not advertise it but just put it in order form so if any clients who wants that location can purchase it. Customer Complaining It would be nice to see some proof that you hear our customer complaining. If they were to complain, it would be in our ticket and not to the public. So do not make fake comments about this. Yes we do not lie so I would agreed that there are 2-3 including yourself who asked about the downtime and slow issues. Server Load Can you tell me how high was the server load? Do you know how many CPU do we have? We have 8 CPU so even if the server load were to go up to 8.0 ; it will be divided by 8 which is 1.0+. I have taken a screen shot of the server load a few minutes ago and the number of CPU in our server. http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/4945/prestonhost.png SSH Access Yes I totally agree that this may confuse all our future clients. We apologise for this mistake and will make the necessary changes as soon as possible. We used to offer SSH access only after a few verifications just for security purposes. User can do a lot of things to our server just by giving SSH Access. Slow Support Can you tell us where did our support ticket slow in? I have check the logs from your account and found out that all your support tickets was resolved within 1 hour. You are on a budget Master Reseller Hosting and you expect us to answer your issues within 5 minutes? Our services only cost you $3, not $30. I am not being rude but I am just stating the facts that we are a budget host. You cant expect a instant reply. Lastly Refund You agreed to our Terms & Condition before you sign up. It stated clearly that we only offer 3 Days FULL-Refund if you are unsatisfied with our services. We understand that you are unsatisfied, but do you expect us to break our own terms just to refund you? You already agreed at first. I bet you just tick that you agreed without reading it. I totally disagree with this statement "They hide behind their TOS, because they limit refunds to only three days after)". Our refund policy have been there since the first day we've been in business. Let me just quote the whole refund policy. I apologise if my words is a bit harsh but this is just to clarify the issue. Good luck with your next host. Have a great day ahead Last edited by Faris Aziz; 06-19-2010 at 01:51 AM.

It is quite unpleasant do these things. But review you is necesary to inform people of your history before making bussiness with you, to make think a little before purchasing. I will list troubles as you have done. Server Slow & Downtime Issues What's the point? I am aware that you have plans on a server located in Asheville, but we're talking about slow and downtimes at your server in Florida, not Asheville. Customer Complaining http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showpo...7&postcount=10 https://prestonhost.com/forum/florid...issue-t-2.html Server Load Yes, now is fine. But days ago?, I saw cpu loads up to 20. I could not take screenshots because you rebooted it. SSH Access I asked for SSH Access. Do you give me SSH Access?. No. Slow Support I am not complaining about slow support, i said "support not resolute", what means that support does not solve troubles, Regarding when you had downtime, I repeatedly asked you to migrate my account, you would do it, but then you gave up. And your server continued with downtimes and patch solutions (which solve the problem at the moment, you only reboot the server as i saw 06/09/2010 and 06/11/2010). Until recently, you send a email to your customers (4 hours ago), announcing the future migration of all master reseller clients from your server in Florida to another servers in Dallas. Wow, i thought that my review makes sense!. I'm glad to read it. Thank you. Lastly Refund "Break" your TOS isn't necesary. If you have a lot of troubles with a server and faced down customers, could make an exception. I never wanted to do this. As you know, I choose to solve the problems that we had by tickets, but they didn't work, so I was obliged to post it in this way. Do not make me quote the tickets please. As I put in above, now problems have been fixed, but after three weeks of slow service and wasting of money. I agree, your are a budget host, but paid. Sorry, but I see better speeds an uptimes at IsMyWebsite (free host)

Thanks for this review

Sorry to hear about your experience, and certainly would help someone as there is a lot of information in this thread both from OP and host.

For security purposes this is completely worthless - it's just an inconvenience and pisses people off. If you think you have to ask for verification for SSH access ("for security reasons"), there is something very very wrong and lacking with your security. Any user can do all of the same things with Python, Rails, CGI, Perl, PHP, etc. So why not make people request PHP access and have to show ID or only be allowed to host static files?

They agree to move my account to Asville server but need to pay money for it.

Posted by CyberHostPro, 06-23-2010, 07:10 PM
Hi Had a read through this, Glad you found a good host! however if you go for $3 master reseller, well I can honestly say you do get what you pay for! think about it.. if a server cost $300 month and you sold accounts for $3 each.. think how many accounts you would have to sell before you make a profit? For reliable hosting you will want to be paying at least 10 times that, https://www.prestonhost.com/ took about 35 seconds from my 50mb broadband so they must have some issues, however many hosts do come and go, usually ones with silly costs like this one! If your looking for a reply to this post from PrestonHost, i doubt they will.. the person who replied above now says user suspended Good luck with your new provider.

They are a 'kiddie' host, didn't you know? They are very cheap for a reason, and clearly you found out the bad way. I wish you luck, and thank you for posting your review.

Sorry to hear about your poor experience with prestonhost. Hopefully they can resolve some of the issues that you faced

Posted by ldcdc, 06-23-2010, 08:12 PM
Took 3-4 seconds to load on my 12MB broadband though.

Posted by PaulOwens, 06-23-2010, 08:16 PM
Don't forget, they are using SSL for the main site, which can vastly slow the load down for the initial first page.

Posted by Andrew Moore, 06-23-2010, 08:33 PM
Hmm, Loaded In a few seconds and im on 16mb

Posted by Dan-CKS, 06-24-2010, 05:00 PM
loaded in 13 seconds and am on 20Mb

Posted by SteeLeR, 06-24-2010, 07:04 PM
Thank your support. They are still offering Shell Access ¬¬ : http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=958914 Now they sell accounts at Asheville server at the same price of Florida server (now Dallas server)... I hope the people that read their announce read this before purchase. Please note that their main page http://www.prestonhost.com is hosted at Los Angeles (US2) server, reselled from thewebhostserver, midphase i think.

I agree on the server overloading. You guys might have 8 core cpus. But then you guys are on a VPS which mean you guys can use the whole 8 cpus. What I see is that you guys are limit on using 1 core only. Once it the server load reach over 1.00+ the green check mark goes red. I been with them for 1 month now and going for the 2nd month to see how everything goes and if theirs any change.

Posted by JixHost, 06-27-2010, 07:45 PM
Ok, $2 for a reseller account? If a server prices about $200/month, how many resellers do they have to put on the server to make a profit?... Over 100 resellers! If you put 100 resellers on a server its going to be extremely overloaded. Any questions?

Posted by AuniqueHost-Jr, 06-27-2010, 08:52 PM
I see I had a typo their. I mean "can't" use the whole 8cpus. But atm since they had change server, it seems to be fine for now. All tho` when they first changed server they had a few downtime but it' wasn't long till they got things fix.

Posted by warlock-m, 06-28-2010, 04:10 PM
Unless they were Resellers but being a reseller doesn't mean sell cheap (very very cheap) hosting.

Posted by hehazone, 06-28-2010, 09:36 PM
I was just going to order the same plan as you mentioned above Lucky that I read this thread and it completely changed my mind. Thanks OP

Posted by SteeLeR, 06-28-2010, 10:08 PM
Please keep us updated They are hosted on a VPS, and the price for the server mentioned in first post FYI prices 3$ . Yes, you are right You are welcome

Posted by netomatic, 06-29-2010, 02:11 AM
No, its ezpzhosting

Posted by warlock-m, 06-29-2010, 12:18 PM
Really? because ezpzhosting gives excellent services and I've seen very very good reviews, so prestonhosts hosting shouldn't be so bad at all...

Posted by viMichael, 06-29-2010, 01:08 PM
I've seen this host about before, i can't really say i've tried them, by the sounds of things i don't want to. Good luck finding your next host

Posted by AuniqueHost-Jr, 06-29-2010, 09:07 PM
Yes the main site is hosting with ezpzhosting but the hosting reseller are from another server which isn't on the same provider and same server.

Posted by warlock-m, 06-29-2010, 09:19 PM
Ah ok ok... that is different, if they were resellers from ezpzhosting I guess the situation would be different as that company is just excellent...

Posted by SteeLeR, 06-29-2010, 09:25 PM
Yes. BTW they do not offer these plans at ezpz anymore, now they only sell whm reseller hosted at vps accounts.

I can't recommend PrestonHost either. Have been having problems, gave them a few days and as I come to migrate my account with my important data on where is it? I cannot login to cPanel or WHM. Not impressed.

Posted by Connor-, 07-06-2010, 12:31 PM
Just logged onto my cpanel to find half my files missing. Thats 500+ lines of code im not getting back.

Posted by TannerTheSeeker, 08-04-2010, 04:02 AM
Hello, I've been with prestonhost for over four months, I haven't had any issues. I'm sorry for the bad experience with the company, I know Faris is a reasonable guy that is always willing to help the situation. Kindest Regards, Tanner

Posted by CKGroup, 08-04-2010, 05:05 AM
Sorry to hear you had poor poor experience with prestonhost. Hopefully your new host will not be the one taking you down this time.

Posted by TmzHosting, 08-04-2010, 08:18 AM
Choosing a smaller host was a good choice. They usually take care of their customers much more than bigger companies. - Daniel
