Nameservers 2 resellers accounts

Posted by jaggededge5, 08-07-2010, 12:43 AM
Hey I have two resellers accounts. What i would like to do is setup my main domain something.com to have two nameservers point to reseller account 1 and then two nameservers point to reseller account 2. So here is a break down of what i want to do. I would like to register these 4 nameservers for my main domain. Reseller account #1 ---------------------- ns1.something.com (ip address 2.2.2.1) ns2.something.com (ip address 2.2.2.2) Reseller account #2 ---------------------- ns3.something.com (ip address 4.4.4.1) ns4.something.com (ip address 4.4.4.2) So if i have a client that i want to put on reseller account 2 can i just tell them to use nameservers n3 and ns4 Will this work and if not how do i do this. Thanks in advance for all your help guys.

yes, This can be done. You can have multiple nameservers for the same main domain.

Are these reseller accounts using cPanel/WHM or another control panel? Within your admin panel you should be able to set the NS entries for each reseller account separately. That way when a user signs up and the account is auto-created it will auto-create DNS entries and the emails the user gets can be customized with the information -- kind of assumed you have a panel you are using, as well as the fact you have an automatic provisioning system. Can you give us an idea of what your system setup is? WHMCS maybe?

I'm using WHMCS for client account management and then WHM/cpanel

If you would have an VPS or an dedicated server you could setup cPanel DNS clustering and you could also move the client without him having to change the DNS configuration with their domain registrar. To answer your question: yes, your way of doing it would work.

Your methods will work, however if I was you I would make sure to add the entries to your host summary at your registrar (obviously the domain in question). I recommend having all of your nameservers setup in your host summary at the registrar. After you do that then you can add the entries to your zonefile. After you have done those steps then you are fine. If you are having WHMCS send automatic messages when you create an account you need to setup server groups. When you have 1 server WHMCS will send the correct nameservers to your clients, but when you have 2 you have to make sure the second server/reseller package is setup in a different server group. If you go to the WHMCS forums you will find this out. You want to make sure (if you aren't sending the welcome e-mails yourself (the message that tells them the account information)) that your clients get the correct nameservers. I suppose this only applies if you are using automatic setup. After you have added your entries to your host summary, and your zonefile (if you have automatic setup) go to the WHMCS forum and ask them how WHMCS differentiates which server e-mail to send to the client. I might be confusing you, and I hope not. But WHMCS only has 1 e-Mail that goes out with account information and it is for 1 server/reseller package. When you add a second server/reseller to your WHMCS you have to make sure there is a 2nd e-mail that will send your clients the correct nameserver information! The WHMCS forum will help you if you encounter any problems. People here will also be more then glad to assist you!

Your setup is what everyone does with their nameservers. Make sure you configure A record for ns1 ns2 ns3 ns4 or the nameserver will not work properly.

You should have glue records for your new nameservers in place. So, add the new nameservers with your host as well as domain provider panel.
