Using IIS 7.5 for FTP accounts

Posted by Ron, 09-18-2014, 09:16 PM
I am using IIS 7.5's built in FTP. I want to know more about connection timeouts. In Advanced Settings, there is a section called Connections. In that section there is "Control Channel Timeout" and "Data Channel Timeout". I don't understand the difference between the two and how they should be set. The default settings are way too short of time. On one account, I set them both at "0". It seems to work fine and does not timeout. Only me and my developers use FTP. We are not in the hosting business. Is there anything wrong with setting them at "0"?

I actually read that web page before coming here. What it does not explain is the difference between the controlChannelTimeout and the dataChannelTimeout. How should these two be set differently? I have one FTP acct. set at '0' for both and it seems to not timeout, which is want I prefer as I don't like FTP timing out on me. But is that really OK?

It's not going to bother anything if you leave it open all the time. Typically most Sysadmins will tell you never to leave something open all the time mainly for security reasons. So basically in your data channel time outs are going to be enforced when actual data is being transmitted. Control channel are just normal operations like browsing directories etc...

So if I don't want it to timeout for the period of time I am using it I should set both settings at zero (0)?

Hi, Control Channel timeout specifies the FTP to disconnect when there is no activity. The default time is 120 seconds. Data Channel Timeout specifies the data channel disconnection because of no activity for long time and the default for this is 30 seconds. Zero means you are giving it no limit. Instead of zero, I will suggest increasing it and testing the connection.

Hi, Control Channel deals with FTP connection. Data Channel deal with data flow through it.
