Website slow after SSL
Posted by SAHostKing, 09-18-2014, 11:20 AM |
Hi,
We made our whole website with all pages active with ssl.
However when doing a test with gtmetrix.com and tools.pingdom.com the website has become alot slower than before by 2 seconds.
We use cPAnel and it's on a VPS server with 1 core and 2 GB of memory.
It's a small site with no viewers on at most times.
I'll upgrade the VPS now but does anyone know any good tweaks to make it faster. GZIP is enabled by the way.

Hi,
It may help to implement SPDY and set the Strict-Transport-Security header. The websites spdycheck.org and webpagetest.org may be helpful in finding other issues.

Hi,
Have you checked the cyphersuits in the cPanel/apache configuration? Checking this might be of some benefit in speed the site.

You can load balance the static and dynamic pages using ngnix and apache.

Removing unwanted cipher suites might help in speeding up. Check your site with webpagetest.org. Also caching contents.

I had one site where installing the SSL cert and the little secured logo the customer wanted slowed the page down quite a bit. Come to find out, the load time was all due to the little logo that was taking a full 3 seconds to load from the service.
Sometimes its the simple things ....

If its slow then it maybe anything from a server side issue, probably an application OR a site app (OScommerce OR Wordpress OR Vbulletin OR Joomla etc) with an older version. Ideally, an SSL having installed over server shouldn't be a cause behind the degraded performance. But, will still try and test it on our servers.
