Can clients of WHM resellers use SSL on their accounts
Posted by LampNetworks, 10-07-2011, 01:12 PM |
I have a WHM/cPanel reseller package on a shared server and by billing has secure connection using my own purchased SSL cert (for domain only).
My host informs me it is not possible for my clients to use their own SSL, is this a restriction of my host or is it the norm?
I can sell them (as a SSL reseller) and see the option to install from my WHM reseller panel.

They can use ssl on their account yes but they may not be able to install it for themselves if they do not have root access to their server to do so.

they will also have to have a dedicated ip for the ssl.

I have the option to install a SSL Certificate and setup the domain in WHM on behalf of the client. This is the form fill and submit option, I don't have root access.
The host *may* mean "not allowed" rather than not possible and wouldn't sell me dedicated IP addresses anyway.
What I'd like to know. In your experience or generally what would you expect?
Would you expect to be able to offer your clients SSL hosting on a shared server under your WHM/cPanel reseller, or is it an option that is rarely made available.

i would allow it as there is no security issues it may be that i would install it as opposed to letting the reseller.

Depends on how your host is running and managing the servers.
If the feature has been enabled for clients to install SSL on their own (they need dedicated IP) they can install it themselves.
Also with GlobalSign OneClickSSL it has become super easy for clients to do that. But for that host has to install the plugin on the server.

Your host should install it for you, but you may have to purchase the required dedicated IP, normally a couple of dollars.

My host does sell dedicated IPs to its resellers for their own site but not to its resellers on behalf of the resellers' clients. I assume this is why no SSL for my clients.
My host reply saying *not possible* perhaps should have said *not allowed*, then it would have been clearer to me.
Thanks for the replies. I now know what I require from my future new host before my current hosting contract expires.
