Recommend a Firewall?
Posted by RobInRockCity, 03-18-2016, 09:52 AM |
In the process of switching hosting providers and was curious what firewalls are out there, and which ones are the best.
One host I am considering does not offer "advanced support", which means they only support what they install.
One their VPS package, they offer CentOS and CSF for the firewall.
Is CSF any good? And is it enough for a small-to-medium business to keep out bad guys?

CSF is quite good, but if your server isn't secured or your scripts are vulnerable, there's no firewall on this earth that can keep the bad guys out.

CSF is a good firewall. We have used it for years and always been happy with it. But like Andei said, There is no firewall that will prevent everything. But csf is easy to use.

With my former web host, I think there was some other firewall they used as the default. Any ideas?
If you got advanced support and paid then to install it, I think they switched you to CSF since it was better.
Any ideas what the default CentOS firewall would have been?

Agreed. When I have spare time, I hope to learn more about Linux and web hosting and securing my server. In the mean time, at least I have sites like this to help!

APF / BFD with DDOS Deflate is very good option as well. Just does not have the web interface for configuration.

I think PAF was the "lower" quality firewall my former host offered by default.
Sounds like CSF is an improvement moving forward.

It all comes down to the configuration. We have seen APF stop attacks that hardware firewalls were letting through. Granted the standard base APF firewall configuration is crap. Just like anything, you need to take time to research and properly configure for your setup.
