DNSonly with a Reseller CPanel Hosting
Posted by handrea, 01-13-2013, 10:19 AM |
Hello,
we have some reselling hosting package (as customer) based on CPanel/WHM and we'd like create DNS redundancy by a server (managed by us) based on DNSonly package.
Into the reseller accounts we have access to "Setup Remote Key Access" section in WHM. My question is:
is it possible create a DNS cluster in such condition or we need to be totally owner/root also of all CPanel Reselling hosting servers?
Thank you
Andrea

You cannot create a Clustered DNS on a Reseller Hosting account. You would need root access to do so.

Assuming you have API access and typical reseller level dns control in WHM, this is technically possible though not easy.
Basically you'll need to write a script that will pull your zones via the api and compare them to the zones on the DNS only box. Any changes/additions would then need to be added to the DNS only server. This is something that would need to run every 10 or 15 minutes to remain functional.

You can setup several cPanel DNS only servers and use these as your nameservers. The only problem is that without root access to your reseller account you cannot link the reseller account to the cPanel DNS only nameservers. Therefore any DNS changes made on the reseller server are not automatically synchronised with the cPanel DNS only nameservers. Like DWS2006 has said above this is possible but not straightforward.

technically is possible for a reseller
but most hosts will not allow to sync the zones
just get a DNS only vps

Thank you everybody for reply. The DWS idea is very good even if more complex. In that perspective I think we don't need a dnsonly server but could use this approach to replicate dns zones also to a "plain" simple Centos + DNS I suppose.
Reseller hosting is good for a lot of customers but the most of them configure dns1 = dns2 = the hosting server so, with long downtime, also DNS zones disappears creating problems also to third parties host (suppose a scenario where you define hosts like myhost.branch.example.com).
Thank you everybody for suggestions

Hi Andrea, although a bit late response perhaps the PowerDNS route might be an option? I came across your thread doing some research in this.
