Seeking information about managed servers

Posted by Markozz, 08-12-2007, 06:47 AM
I am totally new to this and also this is my very first post, so please be gentle with me. Although I am learning more and more every day, I now feel that there are some questions which are ready to be asked. I'm not presently looking for server management, (I've got a VPS) I would like to know a little bit about managed servers. My question is, with a managed server, who actually owns the server and where does it come from? If it is the customer, then does the customer provide the server to the server management company? Or does the customer purchase a server from the management company? Thanks.

There's two ways of doing it really... You can buy a server from a company, then go and buy management from another company. Although technically I wouldn't call that Managed Hosting. Then there's the proper way where you rent a server with full management from the same company. This has particular advantages in that when something goes wrong it's all one company's responsibility for both the hardware and software sides. Dan

Personally I would suggest PSM (PlatinumServerManagement.com) to manage your VPS if using cPanel as your control panel. I have been with PSM for a while now and I never had any issue with them. Their staff is friendly, always helpful and always wanting to work and help me out. Try looking into them, give them a call.

Thanks for that. I have read good things about them on here. Also, I've just been to PSM's website. It appears (according to their website) that they only provide server management. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, but do they provide leased, managed servers?

Hi, There are two things 1. You lease server from unmanaged server provider such as LT and subscribe management service from 3rd party 2. You lease server from fully managed server provide such as rackspace. thanks

More thanks. I also decided to fire off an email direct to PSM, with a similar question to what I posted here. Within ten minutes, I got a terrific answer (and then some) about everything that I asked. I was expecting, considering where I am down-under, to have to wait at least 24 hours with time zone differences etc, but ten minutes is fantastic. Now that is customer service and I'm not even a customer. I think that I might already know where I'll be going for server management when I get to that stage. Thank you Ethan!

A company reselling from a datacenter would be your best option for example server4sale resell from layeredtech and offer management plans. You buy it all from one place which saves problems. Layeredtech own the physical server, while server4sale resell it, and use there own support team, you are "renting" or "leasing" as server when you get a dedicated unless you colo.

PSM doesn't offer dedicated servers, they are only a server management company, a great one at that. Honestly I think buying an unmanaged server and turning it into a managed server is the best key so far, even though it does sound a bit complicated. eek! two bills but I'd rather pay two bills and save than pay one bit fat bill. In my own experience, it works well - then again I'm with thee best server management company PSM . Normally web hosts sell "managed" servers for $XXX(server cost) + $75+? (managed) extra to your cost because its managed.... Example: If you found a P4.30 for $120 a month - unmanaged. Then they offered the same server. P4.30 - managed for $185 you can see the difference here. I'd rather pay $120 + $29 = 149 and saving myself the extra $$. Think about it. PSM is a good choice to use
