NetBSD / FreeBSD hosting

| I am looking for a new hosting company. I only need one or two modestly powerful machines at the current time but might need more as I scale up.
I am looking to get quotes from five companies or so. Suggestions? I'm very smart about programming technology but not about admin or hosting issues at all.
I have had one server at RackSpace for several years and it is time to upgrade because my OS version is getting so old that I cant install up-to-date software easily. I have been happy with RackSpace but I dont think it make sense for me to remain as I dont think that RedHat Linux is a good choice for me.
I would like to be able to start with conventional hosting but be able to move up to Managed Hosting when and if I need it.
I want support for BSD. Im thinking of running NetBSD as my Xen host OS and OpenBSD for the OSs that we actually log into. These virtual machines are running a number of applications including TomCat-based web servers and a Python-based web spider.
I am moving to BSD for several reasons:
I want to be able to systrace / jail particular scripts for security reasons and unless I install a custome kernel that would not be supported by RackSpace, I cant get that feature.I want to be able to do upgrade the operating system incrementally, something that RedHat does not seem designed to do, as I understand it.
Who do you recommend that can support me when I need it and can support BSD as well or better than RackSpace supports RedHat?
Reliability and big pipes are important to me. Holding down cost is also important.

| Have you (or anyone else) had experience with kualo.com, good or bad?
Do they support Xen virtual machines on their servers? That could be good.
Other options?
Anyone think I'm making a mistake with BSD?

| Good, very good, I would say. I mentioned them because they do deserve it, and yes, I did have services from them twice ago. Both Jo and Craig run a great company. They are certainly not *cheap*, but I believe in this case you do get what you pay for.

Did you run a BSD system there? For how long? For what sorts of applications?

Though I had a FreeBSD server with them for 1-2 months around 2 years ago or so, and I can vouch for their great service through direct experience with them from other services, please note my initial response: "I know kualo.com run FreeBSD servers and are able to offer fully managed FreeBSD based servers."

| I've run FreeBSD and nothing but for quite a few years; the road is somewhat lonelier than with linux; be sure that your platform will support all the software you need it to. For hosting companies a more limited selection of "control panel" software and virtualization are among the areas which have less support than in linux land. I don't offer virtual servers and my control software is my own so its not an issue for me.
From an OS stability / ease of use perspective, I'm very pleased. I like the way FreeBSD is developed, packaged and released. Ports is very nice.

| You have a hosting service yourself? What's the name of your service? You dont support Xen? Why not? Are there problems with it I should know about?

| probably not, it really depends on what you're looking to do, and from what you mentioned in your post BSD is probably the better choice for you.

| The man speaks the truth. I have well over 20 FreeBSD boxes running myself, and I love every second of working with them. You have to accept some stuff just ISNT going to work without alot of modification, but if your focused on a standard deployment, then thats going to be the most stable, powerful deployment you have ever offered.
Ports are my friend.
