Reseller Hosting vs. Shared Hosting

Posted by Wankawoo, 01-15-2014, 03:52 PM
I am currently starting a new internet marketing company and will be offering web hosting. Most of the potential clients that I will be working with does not want to be bother with web hosting or managing their site (cPanel and such). With that being said, is it common to do shared hosting rather than reseller hosting (domain w/cpanel). I look forward to your reply. Mike

With your situation, i would suggest you to go with Reseller hosting, keeping your identity shared hosting would not be prefered, you can manage and costing wise reseller would be best for you..

It depends on your budget. If you don't have a big budget, you can have shared hosting with as many addon domains as you need. If you have enough in your budget to go for a small reseller with enough accounts to use for your clients websites, you know that each one is secure if one got exploited. As it wouldn't allow the hacker to access all your customers websites though one account.

Get a reseller, otherwise the management of different sites will give you a headache when their numbers rise. You might also look into a VPS.

If you want to order a separate hosting package for each client, this may be a good idea; as you likely also spread the servers the clients are on in this way (at least if you have a somewhat larger hosting provider with many servers) it may although be more management for you to remember where which site is located. If you planned to take 1 shared hosting package and use add-on domains; i would say this is not the path you should follow; as all your clients would run under 1 account, and 1 compromised site would compromise all your clients. In that case its much better to go for a reseller account and have an account for each of your clients.

1 To not utilizing a shared account. Reseller accounts will have the added benefit of you controlling the pricing and billing. This means you set the terms and payment amounts, and bill for them. With shared hosting, you would have to employ a third party solution to bill which does not connect to your hosting package. Yes you could probably do it all manually, but why?

Shared hosting is fine to start off with.. i had been doing it for years with 20+ clients.. dont rush into expensive reseller accounts especially when you are just starting out.

Also check the TOS, if you are hosting sites that you are being compensated for on a shared package, you might be in violation.

Depends on the number of clients and their website needs. In any way, in terms of security and easy management, I would always go for a Reseller Package, for reasons stated above - easier billing, accounts neatly together and yet with separate cPanels for better security, more resources to utilize. And many times the Reseller package is not so costly when compared to a Shared package, if you take into account all those factors.
