Reseller Suitable for a Web Developer?
Posted by Ariolander, 04-24-2014, 03:40 AM |
Hello I am a web developer and I am wondering if it is a smart idea to use a reseller hosting to compartmentalize all my clients development sites so it is easier for them to move to their own real hosts down the road. Just pack a cpanel site backup of their final site that they can take to their own host.
Is this good/effective use of a reseller package and if so can anyone recommend a low cost, low resource reseller host suitable for my needs? I looked at the offers section and the most reputable hosts have way more resources than I need for a handful of dev sites and the ones that aren't seem to lack any reputation to speak of.

You can also consider bundling hosting as a package with your services as well. Some clients prefer to be hosted directly by whoever developed their websites as they feel if they have any issue, it can be easier diagnosed by the developer since the developer would have full and direct access to their website and be more aware of the settings on their server.
As the websites are developmental and not being employed for actual usage, I would assume the traffic aren't too high and a shared hosting environment (reseller hosting is classified under this category as well) should definitely suffice. Even if those websites subsequently launch, unless you are seeing alot of traffic (thousands of unique visitors per day, etc) they would still continue to load properly on a shared hosting environment.
Do you have any specific requirements such as location preference and resources in mind? You may want to let us know your budget for this as well.

A reseller sounds perfect for your usage. You might want to shoot an email to hosts that you're interested in, many of them might offer a custom package minus the features that you don't need.

Hi Ariolander,
you have following options:
1. Buy Reseller Plan
2. Buy a Hosting plan from a best hosting company which will allow you to host multiple websites in single Cpanel Account
3. Buy Hosting From third party and host your clients websites there.
4. Buy Hosting From third party and host your clients websites there with Affiliate Programe, it will give you some amount.
For No. 1 : if you go through the reseller paln of any host you will have to pay fixed amount to your host (even for your unused diskspace)
for e.g if you buy 100GB reseller plan and you have 50 customers with 1 GB hosting, you will get an amount for 50 GB from your clients but remaining unused 50 GB you have to pay from your pocket.
in that case you will have to sell the remaining 50 GB of webspace. and you will have to handle support queries also from your clients regarding emails etc.
You are handling 2 Businesses at a time.
For No. 2: If you Buy a Hosting plan from a best hosting company which will allow you to host multiple websites in single Cpanel Account, it has a drawback that if your client asks for his Cpanel account to make DB Changes or client want to take a Backup of website, you cant handover your Cpanel account as it has lot of websites, in that case you have to provide FTP account.
For No. 3: Buy Hosting From third party and host your clients websites there. Third Party will handle the support queries that your client occur.
For No. 4: Buy Hosting From third party and host your clients websites there with Affiliate Programe, it will give you some amount as a commission
Choice is Yours.
if you go through low cost, cheap reseller plans you may face lot of issues in support.
be sure whenever you choose the server/resellers it should be best.
because Client Relation is Most Important than Money..

I have a number of different colleagues who are web developers and they do things a number of different ways. Some of them are savvy enough to host the sites themselves.
Others are so busy with the website development portion of their jobs that they don't have the time or interest to host websites so they use me to host their sites for their customers. I just give them a big affiliate discount and they give me the sites to host. It's actually a great relationship as they have a fairly solid business channel of clients and I gain hosting here and there, depending on how busy they are and their needs.
If you've got the time, I'd say you should look into hosting them yourself (as in you buy reseller or VPS services from another host). But if you simply want to focus on website design and not be in the hosting business then find an affiliate who understands the needs of website developers and designers.

Yes, a reseller account is a good idea.
Only one I've used and been very happy with is Arvixe.

Thank you for the recommendation Sam
Ariolander, based on what you are saying, you'd need a Reseller plan so each site can have their own cPanel(which will make it much easier to move to a separate account if they want to, as you suggest may happen). Even though the reseller packages offer a lot for the price, if you only have 2 to 4 sites then ordering an individual hosting plan for each site will also be cost-effective.

If you could tell us which platform you use for development, it will be helpful in assisting you on your requirement.
If you use PHP and MYSQL you can go with Linux Resellers with WHM control panel.and for .net and asp.net with SQL you can go with Windows based Reseller hosting plans.
On windows Platform You can host both PHP as well as .net based Websites whereas Linux does not supports .net based applications.

It sounds like you have low traffic sites diskspace/bandwidth wise and so could ask for a custom quote.
Do you know how much diskspace and bandwidth you are currently using? What about server location? Would also be good to know of your budget.

Personally, I like WHMCS combined with WHM/cPanel. Or even just WHM/cPanel. Easy for your to manage, and each customer of yours can have their own hosting account, keeping everything nice and separate.
