Moving to SSL Domain
Posted by abushahin, 05-03-2014, 06:55 PM |
I'm in the process of moving to https, from regular http.
What problems am I likely to encounter if any?
I will probably have to change my WHMCS license due to IP change any other things Im likely to have to change?
I'm using cpanel/whm and WHMCS I'll be using Comodo SSL certificate when its ready.
Any advice appreciated.

Are everything on your website getting connected over ssl?? (Like Photos , css and etc)
Are you plan on forcing ssl? if yes, use .htaccess

Other than the photos, you'll need to change the WHMCS settings for links. Instead of the link being an HTTP link add the HTTPS protocol. I think it forces SSL for you, if I'm not mistaken.

Any form of javascript remote calls can cause problems, if they're using non-SSL connection. The user browser may display an error that some items weren't secure.
Just be sure to test loading your web pages via https to see if any scripting problems crop up.

Problems should be minor and can be resolved quickly.
If you want to enforce https access, search for rewrite rule in .htaccess file.

Propagation of IP Address Change
The biggest annoyance you will have is down time for some (but not all) of your clients trying to access your website because of the change of IP address.
When you change your A record in DNS (to change your IP address), it will take 4 to 8 hours for it to propagate worldwide.
In practical terms, this means that some people will see the change almost immediately (typically people who have not visited your website in the last 8 hours or so), while anyone who has visited your website in the last 8 hours will have a cached DNS entry, and will continue to try to access your website at the old IP address for another 4 to 8 hours until the DNS entry expires. They could clear their cache to see your website immediately (assuming their ISP is not also caching the DNS), but most people would just assume your site is down.
Updating Your WHMCS License with the New IP
You will also need to register your new IP address with WHMCS, either through your web host or through WHMCS directly, since your license is tied to your IP address. If you do not update your IP address with WHMCS, your copy will stop working.
And don't forget to configure WHMCS to use https.
Other than that, everything else should be fine.

As an A record, rather than a nameserver change, the TTL is entirely under his control. He can just change to a 300 TTL, wait out the old TTL (typically 4 hours on cPanel) and then change the IP. With very few exceptions (ISPs that ignore the low TTL) the change will propagate within 5 minutes.

Moving to SSL is pretty straight forward. You will need to change to dedicated IP for sure, so there will be IP change involved in the process.
Your web host should be able to help you takes care of this and make sure there is no down time during the IP switch, if you are currently on shared IP.

You just need to plan at least 8 hours ahead though, and wait for the old cached records with the old TTL to expire.
