Which control panel is most prefered?

Posted by build-a-host, 08-09-2009, 04:01 PM
Hello everyone, I have been in the hosting business for the about 5 years now, and I have always offered CPanel w/ Fantastico, or Installatron (which I think is better than Fantastco BWT). Anyway I have been seeing some really great deals on servers with other control panels like, DirectAdmin, of even LXAdmin for, but I'm not sure if they're worth buying ! My question is for hosts that do offer, or have offered, hosting packages with different control panels, and how well they all performed? Is it worth getting a server with LXAdmin, or some other CP for free, then offer high disc space, and bandwidth but, LXAdmin, or even no control panel? I know that CP/WHM is probably the most commonly used control panel, and most likely DirectAdmin is behind that. How well do you do if you offer just LXAdmin, some other 3rd part CP script like XPanel, or even no control panel at all? I'm pondering the idea of adding other packages on a different CP such LXAdmin, or none at all? Those prices could be passed down to the buyer so that I can easily offer packages with high disc space , and bandwidth, and still be playing safe and turning a profit. Or, even normal size packages at insanely low costs. either way. But is it worth it, do you get as many, more, or the same amount of signups for packages with CPanel / DirectAdmin vs. LXadmin / No CP? Thank in advance! Cpanel's great, I like free cp's as well. because you can theme them more and make alot of addons for them, Cant say much on lxadmin as i beleive they are re working on it, But when i did use hypervm and lxadmin it was good, Im testing ehcp ( Easy Hosting Panel ) http://www.ehcp.net/ which seems to be good minor some bugs

cPanel and DirectAdmin are the best IMHO. For a fully managed provider like us, standardizing on a larger set of control panels means increased training prices and complex human resource logistics. As long as your team knows a control panel well, really well, you should add it as an option to your offerings. Otherwise, keep it off your offerings no matter how tempting it is to tell the world you can support it. Regards

I have a question in regaurds to the panel WEBMIN. Do people not like this? I know CPanel is the best, but does WEBMIN (which is free) cause any problems both with managed providers and in terms of security?

Cpanel has been around longer than WEBMIN. I have not use WEBMIN yet, so I can't say anything about it, but I do like Cpanel as it is very easy to use. Their support forum is really helpful. I get most of the answers to my questions on that forum.

You cannot find some exclusive options in Webmin as you see in CPanel or other control panels.

Posted by ServerManagement, 08-10-2009, 07:37 AM
It really depends on what you are doing. I think cpanel is one of the most full featured control panels, so if your niche is competing with other cpanel hosts, you'll need to have cpanel. (ie, a host with no control panel can't really offer what a host with cpanel offers) But if you have a different niche or are just hosting your own sites, then a cheaper cp or no cp may be sufficient for you.

If I were to use the webhosting account my choice would be Cpanel or directadmin. CPanel because it is the most popular and features and functionality is best. Directadmin because it is smaller and quite popular.

cPanel is choice! cPanel would have to be the most smartest and up to date web hosting control panel today. It has most of the features other control panels dont dont. It is also user friendly

This software looks great. Thanks for the resource. For some reason it stands out from all the other free ones. I can tell it has some bugs, but for free and open source you can just fix them yourself.

Cpanel just makes it all so easy. Plus, I and clients are so used to it now that to change it makes no sense whatsoever. Big fan of it now.

cPanel seems to be the favorite. I think I use it out of convenience because it is so well supported. I used Directadmin in the past and loved it because of the simplicity of the interface and it's speed. Webmin is nice but it is confusing and hard to configure for virtual hosting IMO. Ehcp looks promising and easy to install. I think I might give it a try on a VPS.

cPanel for sure, I've also used direct admin which is nice but cpanel just makes things so much easier. I remember using it for the first time and it seemed complicated, right now I know it like under my bed (I know most of the stuff down there but occasionally I find something new )

Great topic. Go cPanel!

When I first started my own website on a new domain, I was set up with a cPanel account, and it certainly made things much easier for me.

No it has not. Webmin was around before Cpanel. But Webmin and Cpanel should not even be compared because they are for two different purposes. Webmin is for server administrators and can do a lot more things than Cpanel and can even run on the same server as Cpanel. But again Webmin is for administrators not for end users. The same is true when comparing Webmin to DirectAdmin.

For web hosting companies DirectAdmin has a lot lower startup cost than Cpanel. Cpanel cannot compete with DirectAdmin on cost.

Cpanel, Plesk and DirectAdmin are the best control panels currently available in the market

Posted by jshtoch, 08-25-2009, 04:23 PM
Cpanel is the best to go with. I only stick around with Cpanel, makes thing much easier to do on a server.

Posted by bdnero, 08-25-2009, 04:27 PM
cpanel is the best when end user is the matter.

Posted by assistanz247, 08-31-2009, 11:59 AM
cPanel most widely preferred by end users. Let us see how Enkompass going to perform.

Posted by blong, 08-31-2009, 01:07 PM
I would have to say cPanel / Fantastico is what most people want; maybe even an industry standard.

Posted by PEAK-Bobby, 08-31-2009, 02:23 PM
You forgot to mention Plesk, we have been using Plesk for our shared hosting accounts for many years. We did some market research with our users and found that they preferred Plesk over cPanel. Their response was the user friendly interface and the easy quick links.

cpanel is a good choice as it's an easier one than other CPs, but it takes more resources than other CPs Thanks

cPanel without any doubt. Direct Admin and Plesk are after cPanel

Posted by yajur, 08-31-2009, 04:57 PM
cpanel is the best choose for cp

Posted by nonparity, 09-26-2009, 02:22 AM
cpanel hands down..i have used plesk, hsphere, directadmin and cpanel wins.

Posted by mynehost, 09-26-2009, 03:31 AM
i have used cPanel, plesk and direct admin... i most prefer cPanel for end user and admin...there a lot of feature which other CP doesn't have... GO for cPanel!!

Hmmm... My personal favorite is DirectAdmin mostly because of simplicity and cost. Webmin is okay ive been testing it on one of my servers to see what its like and it seems good for a free panel. There is also Open Panel witch is another good Free Panel. But in terms with Power & Control cPanel Whoops asses there Many Thanks,

My favorite is cPanel haven't yet tried DirectAdmin

Posted by TheServerExperts, 09-28-2009, 09:55 AM
I vote for cPanel, easy to use.

Posted by talkman, 09-28-2009, 10:11 AM
cpanel is great! really comfortable to use, well directadmin is good and secure, depends on your taste

I started with Webmin and its like a GUI admin interface to a server - learned sys admin using that - then could go edit the files and if I made a mistake, use webmin to "fix it", else was great for managing users and helping with the drigery of account administration. Very non-intrusive and can be configured to work with installed packages. Downside is the stupid user is not shielded and can jack up their server very quickly. You still get the joy of yum updates and fixing things that break occasionally, run your home rolled apache, email, whatever.. On the other end CPanel is almost an OS in itself, use the GUI for everything else risk breaking a server - do not edit files w/o CPanel knowing. Do not taunt happy fun CPanel. Great part is because its taken over the server, everything auto updates and like me, the admin can focus on writing code and not upgrading/recompiling. Folks at CP HQ send out updates, your server stays updated and things work - perfect for those less interested in admin and more into an appliance to run services.. Right now recompiling some Direct Admin so can use php_cgi and will set up a backup server with DA, since I noticed CP is not used much after an account is setup and working, plus I miss hacking up my own server...

No doubts cpanel is the best for everything

Posted by ZenMonk, 10-01-2009, 01:29 AM
Cpanel for its faster evolution rate.

Posted by zhihao, 10-17-2009, 10:18 AM
Cpanel is the best choice, of course, but it is even more expensive than an unmanaged vps.

Posted by Sc00by22, 10-17-2009, 01:34 PM
I have only ever used cPanel because it was the first panel I ever used and liked, so I've kept to that and haven't tried the others.

Posted by Mellanie, 10-22-2009, 12:33 AM
cpanael is good choice, i love fantastico much too

Posted by keserhosting, 10-29-2009, 11:41 AM
Definitely cPanel will be lead ahead in the this race.

Posted by Srv24x7, 10-29-2009, 02:28 PM
You get more business if you are offering cpanel based vps. Lxadmin is something still struggling to find a place in the hosting market. However my choice of vps will be cpanel ( fast and easy ).

Posted by Ringo64, 10-29-2009, 04:45 PM
1 for DirectAdmin, fast, secure, prices a LOT less than cPanel, and tons of features. Can't ask for more than that!

Posted by david510, 10-30-2009, 09:33 AM
yeah.. cPanel....

Posted by RDOSTI, 10-30-2009, 01:12 PM
CPanel is probably the most preferred option. Directadmin is low cost but lacks the punch for a big business. For a person who needs basic hosting with a decent control panel - DA does fine. But if you want to really look far (expansion or big scale multi-purpose projects) - CPanel/WHM makes a whole lot of sense.

Posted by might_b, 10-31-2009, 11:31 PM
I used Cpanel only so far, curious to explore others but i think cpanel is that best bet around.

Posted by Hydro_Host, 11-03-2009, 03:20 PM
I think cPanel would win this poll any day. It is preferred by customers due to it's features and ease of use.

You cannot find some cPanel! has been around longer than WEBMIN

Posted by ForrestY, 11-25-2009, 11:43 AM
cPanel is definitely the most preferred control panel, in my opinion.

Posted by CanSpace, 11-25-2009, 01:51 PM
Yep... +1 for cpanel. Although I find some beginners prefer Plesk as it just looks easier to use.

Posted by encoredesignz, 11-25-2009, 07:28 PM
Definetely cpanel and direct admin, most popular and most simple easy to use tools!

Posted by ImanageNetworks, 11-25-2009, 09:17 PM
cPanel all the way! they got the best script.... upcp!!! That thing fixes everything!
