Should I even look at reseller hosting?

Hello all I am a web designer and many of our clients want us to manage everything - hosting, website updates, etc. I am just wondering what type of account I actually need then... The tech support side will be minimal - as long as the host is up, then I should not be calling them much. We have about 55 clients right now, the majority of those just have static HTML websites. Only about 20 also have a WordPress blog added or an osCommerce store added on. The clients are not interested in managing anything so I am not really concerned with cpanel access for them. Do you think I even need reseller hosting? Or just a large enough business hosting account to accomodate about 55 websites? If other words, just 1 account with all websites/customers on that account. The reason Reseller appealed to me initially is because I could make it a white label so DNS shows us, monthly billing is us, etc. Thank you for your hosting insight! Rob

Yes, you do. This is against most companies TOS & I would also recommend keeping the websites separate. Let's say company A's website becomes compromised and affects company B, C, D & E. You should try to keep things as separated as possible. Just because you have a reseller account doesn't mean you need to give them cPanel access.

Good point Kingfish85 - I hadn't thought of that. Sounds like I need to start looking for a reseller host...

We use reseller hosting just so we can keep the sites separate. Makes them easier to maintain, backup, restore. Plus they are less likely to conflict with each other. You decide how much access you give them. As @hummerton pointed out, you don't need to give them access just because its there.

I would recommend reseller hosting. This will allow each of your customers sites to have their own cpanel (or any other panel you use), as opposed to having all your customers under 1 cpanel.

Second option is to create separate Cpanel shared account for every customer as per their requirements and manage them. But still I will suggest a reseller account as best option.

At the client level you might also consider VPS and or your Own Dedicated Server. Then you would have complete control, a more long term growth path and better performance. Keep in mind, the reseller model is still a "shared hosting" environment.

I would also recommend using a VPS instead of a reseller account. It would isolate your client's website from others and will have less problems down the road. As it seems that you have an established client base, it would be worth it to invest a bit more to have guaranteed stability. I would recommend looking up StormOnDemand storm servers for $55/Mo you will get fully managed and cPanel powered storm server.

Cost of a large business hosting account would be around the same as small reseller account. I can't imagine how you could manage hosting 50 websites in one cpanel account. Managing websites and emails should be much easier with reseller account & WHM.
