Custom Vps hosting for a noob.

Hey all. So I currently run three very small websites for friends and a site a music/video site for myself and although I have unlimited storage and bandwidth with my current shared host I'm apparently over what they would normally allow which seems a little weird. They've suggested a go down the route of vps but their vps packages seem very expensive. I don't make any money from my sites, at all. So I need something reasonable. I guess around the $20-30 area would be ideal. I don't really need a lot, as long as it can support php 5.4 (or above) and ffmpeg. Speed isn't a huge deal, obviously I don't want something that will take an age to load but it also doesn't have to be the quickest, I'd substitute speed for storage. I guess that's where I've been having issues, currently all 4 sites take up around 150gb and will grow from there so I think for the same of the future I've seen a few 300gb deals and I guess that's the ball park I'd like to be in. As the title says I'm a noob when it comes to vps and whilst I'd try and do a little myself if there was good support that'd be an added bonus. If there was a multi-admin sort of control panel where the four sites each have their own panel that'd be cool but I could probably live without it as long as there was a control of some. So to recap: Vps 300gb+ storage Appropriate bandwidth. OK speed, doesn't have to be mega fast, just faster than shared hosting Website control panel (multi-admin?) Some OK support So, any good offers I should check out? Thanks everyone.

It will be better to go for a managed server so that you can have Control Panels for all your domains with a good support as added package. Please specify the bandwidth requirement and the preferred location for the server.

If you plan to grow at that rate it would be better to get a small dedicated server that would offer cheaper storage per dollar than a VPS.

Hey, thanks for your reply. I'm not not fussed with server location, I'm based in the UK so as long as the speeds back here are pretty good then I'd be happy. Bandwidth, erm, I dunno. Initially I can't see me using 1tb so I don't need a huge amount.

If you are based in UK, then it is obvious that you need a UK location. Gives you better latency.

Well I can understand your concern about not earning through your website. But it is something which is very necessary for your business to survive in future. VPS Hosting is no big deal if you have a control panel. Can you confirm what kind of websites are you planning to host on the server? You have mentioned 4 of your websites consume 150 GB of space, so there seems to be a lot of content like videos, audio, pictures etc. It will be easier to give you options based on your further inputs.

Hey, 2 websites are blogs for a friend who is an author. The other acts as a webmail site for them, myself and a couple of other people. My site is a music and video streaming site dedicated to the punk scene. There is a quite a lot of content, a lot of which in high quality, hence the requirements for ffmpeg. None of these are business sites, I've moved them onto premium shared hosting sometime ago, but perhaps they would move on to a vps eventually (if I start to charge them). Basically I'm a website hobbyist and I only do sites for me or my friend. Thanks

On the control panel, have you considered using a free panel such as VestaCP or CentOS Web Panel (CWP). They are a good choice for managing a set of personal sites.

My concern with that would be that they are completely unmanaged, are they not? So I would be concerned about managing the server myself and all the installation of software etc.

I've not heard of either of these actually, although it seems like a good shout as often you're paying $10 a month for cpanel/whm. I'll look into them. Thanks for the tip. Also, I've seen "storage vps". What's the deal with them? Are they literally just cloud storage or could you use them with a control panel to use as a website.

I may be wrong here - but I would imagine that "storage VPS" are basically like any other VPS except with an emphasis on larger storage capacity. The storage comes at a cost - slower CPU, lower RAM, and/or slower read/write access (e.g. non-SSD hard drives versus SSD). These types of services are ideal for backup - where the need to access data often and quickly is not critical. I would imagine something like this would not be suitable for what you are hosting.

300gb for 4 websites seems a lot. If they are heavy on multimedia content, have you considered to offload it to specialized services while keeping the websites itself on your current shared hosting provider?

You know, I never thought of that. Most of the music and videos are backed up on onedrive so I might possibly have been able to set to public and stream from there. I dunno. In the end I went for the aforementioned storage hosting as a base point. It was pretty cheap actually so I figured I'd go with that, test it out, see what I can learn from that then move onto something a little better. I think it'll be OK for now. I installed CWP panel on there and from there it's actually been really easy to set up from there. Thanks everyone for your suggestions and help. I've now got a few options for how I progress from here.
