What makes a VPS Host Good?

I want to learn with a VPS but don't really know what makes a VPS decent. My friend has a VPS hosting company and is offering unlimited bandwith on all of his machines, but I don't know what else makes a VPS good (i.e. what's teh catch on these cheap machines): http://i.imgur.com/DPNwNIR.png It's UK based and I can't think of many uses of a VPS other than creating and using a VPN for Uni so I can game... suppose I could find other decent things to do? Any how, what are the hidden details I should be looking for in a VPS that makes it worth the money?

VPS usage depends on individual's requirements e.g. - If you would like to start your own hosting company then you can purchase a VPS and make it compatible to host as many websites as per the free resource. - If you have website (s) having high traffic then shared hosting will not be sufficient in that case VPS will be more suitable option. - You will get full administrative access of your VPS so you can install and run any software. - People are also using VPS for trading software.

That's actually one way to find out between an "overseller" vs. a provide whose does not. A provider whose oversells (sells more than he/she have in the physical server(s)) will not permits anything that "spoils" their game. Ironic that sounds it usually game servers as they like putting CPU/RAM on the "boil" and would make overselling otherwise much harder to do if those were permitted (Don't fall for "being a DDoS target" as any provider should have automatic null routing if they cannot offer DDoS proection). Another one is streaming servers as well as they are not "resource friendly" either.

A VPS is decent as much as your budget is and mostly depending on the thing you'll be using it for. If you require more specs, you'll need more money, ofc. Also, there is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth. Everything is limited and should be stated in their ToS. A VPS can be used for everything. Projects, homework, blogs (if you have high traffic), online stores, etc... You just need to find what you want/can do with it.

Well the first thing that makes a good VPS is it's reliability.. and by the $2/GB prices your friend has I'd be worried.

If that just the RAM it may actually not be as bad as you think, there are ways to get huge servers with plenty of RAM and other resources. Now if that includes upgraded CPU/HDD/BW as well at $2 increments then I would 100% agrees.

It must have decent and competative price. Some kind of unique seller offer (to be attaractive). And the most important is customer care and support. You should provide what you promised and when user get what he/she paid for or expected to get - that is the best reward for them and I believe they will stay with you and be loyal to you.

You must purchase the required virtual server. In pricing a virtual server bandwidth, location, hardware (RAM, HDD, CPU) and support companies affected However, virtualization is not without effect

These days, it is hard to say anything just based on price. Look at the recent ASO downtime or Linode ddos, even with capable hands, you may face reliability issues. I would although value on a provider who has been there for pretty sometime on any of my serious project if I choose, while for testing, I would possibly roam every where. On my personal choice, I choose a provider with whom I can personally interact, like via phone, meeting or chat. I feel ease on dealing by personal interaction. So, I would vote in your friend's favor.

Check if you get a trial from them. Usually the thing that matters the most is the stability of the server. Your website should work without downtime and shouldn't lag in it's speed and you are good to go. I am still not sure how to expect a reliable vps at the price you mentioned. Good luck though.

if i was a customer i dont buy a server from your firend. Because there is somethink wrong. 1 Ram 1 CPU 2$. Most of the companies sells only ip's to 2$. So if you are looking for a decent vps. First of all look at its hardware then banwith and realism of the server with price.

I always try to read reviews first because you really can't tell without experience. I have had some VPS's that have been rock solid. They were fast and never went down. Then I had others which I always seemd to have problems with - mostly load issues. I think the difference is overselling the hardware resources.
