Web app hosting solution ideas
Posted by c_access, 01-26-2016, 08:59 AM Hello Guys, i'm new to this forum and i decided to ask for some recommendations and thoughts on a mobile (android & iOS) web app that i'm planning to implement soon. Well, the critical question and the one that has been struggle me for the last weeks is, should i go with cloud or VPS? My personal opinion is VPS. I will explain the requirements i have bellow and maybe you can tell if i'm right or no. First of all i need the server to be located in Europe. The server will host a MySQL database, an API, a small Website and will need to be able to handle html requests transformed into database queries and will reply back with the results of these queries.. Hopefully as time goes and the Web app grows it will need to handle a lot of traffic. In and Out. The target is to reach 10.000 subscribers within 1 year of use. Don;t forget in the requirements that this needs to be kept as affordable as possible. My initial thought is to start with a VPS consisted of a 4core CPU, 4GB RAM, 120GB SSD storage and at least 4TB of monthly traffic(not sure how i can calculate that) and depending on the growth and the demand expand-upgrade the server. Do you think this is something that makes sence? Or should i look for other solutions like cloud etc? Thanks in advance for any inputs given. Chris
Posted by gnusys, 01-26-2016, 11:28 AM You should plan well in advance for anything . Although people brand VPS and cloud as 2 different things . Most clouds do provide you a VPS at the end of the day . See what platforms similar service as yours use . Good luck
Posted by anuja9991, 01-26-2016, 02:39 PM You can certainly go with a VPS, but the configuration seems to be higher than what you might need. Start with a little lesser amount of resources and go with the provider who can allow you to upgrade to higher plans in future when your number of subscribers would increase.
Posted by c_access, 01-26-2016, 03:03 PM Thank you both for the replies. I know that i need to plan it carefully, and that's one of the reason i decided to open a thread here. Tunevps, one provider that suits my needs is linode, i'm aware that i can easily buy one of their plans and if needed scale up or add additional features. Also regarding their traffic, for any extra GB they charge something like 0.02$ which i think is fair enough. Do you have any other suggestions?
