Will VPS Hosting have sites down without webhost's close monitor ?

Will VPS Hosting have sites down without webhost's close monitor ? Since transferred to VPS hosting from shared hosting. First downtime, After I know it then I notify the webhost, and they reboot the system. Second downtime, happened right after I went to bed, After I knew it the other day I login the admin panel to check, and restart the server myself. This time total 10 hour downtime. Is this common for VPS hosting ? What are likely the causes ?

Too many answers to your questions, but; 1. Did you have such issues on shared? 2. Did you upgrade within the same company or did you move to a new host? 3. If you did move to a new host....cheap host? (moving due to price tends to lead to issues) 4. Did the host make any promises about uptime, monitors, etc? 5. Any OS changes? Something sounds off between the transition and either your host or logs could explain what's happening. Is VPS dowtime common...no. If this were the case, there would not be a VPS industry.

The most probable explanation for downtime on a VPS is if there is a server misconfiguration or a crash caused by your web server or database server being overwhelmed. Do you know if you VPS itself is shutting down or is it the webserver/database server?

Of course that's not common. Has your provider given you any clues as to what has happened? If you could answer the questions by 48-14, that would help us help you.

(moving due to price tends to lead to issues) they have different levels, I chose the cheapest one. 4. Did the host make any promises about uptime, monitors, etc? not aware 5. Any OS changes? no

their reply As we don't have any information and there is no info in file /var/log/messages we can't tell you how to prevent this problem in future.

How much ram on your vps? What you hosted on your vps? Is it managed by your provider or unmanaged?

The issue is probably your host since the site is working well from shared hosting. You might need to contact them on this.

Ram 128MB mostly html webpages, not much graphic images I believe it is unmanaged type. Will increase real memory really helpful ? if so , what level of memory is better ?

Try to contact the host and nd ask them to investigate possible reason for the server crash. If they find it happens because of the low memory, you could ask them to upgrade but if the host is oversold and bad neighbours bring the server down then its not your website which requires high memory.

Switch hosts. To me this is a sign that they're pushing the blame for the VPS being offline to you which is likely NOT the case. It could be that the entire server went down and your VPS didn't boot on startup (by design). It could be that there is an odd quirk with just your VPS. It could be that your host is shutting your server down, and not telling you. My servers all have an init script that sends an email on boot and shutdown. Depending on how quickly the server shuts down we might not get the shutdown notice until after the server is back up, however, it does help us differentiate between a graceful shutdown and an abrupt one.

Are there any server settings that would causing much RAM usage ? I wish to disable not really important/optional setting to release more usable memory. Thanks.
