Cheap but reliable VPS Hosting?

Posted by kelemvor33, 08-21-2016, 11:39 PM
Howdy, I'm looking for a way that I can have a mySQL database that I can access from my personal laptop at home instead of having to use phpmyadmin. My current host said I can only do that if I switch to a VPS hosting plan instead of my current shared plan. Of course this would triple my costs so I'm looking for other options. The site is rarely used and mainly just for a tiny store for my kid's school so a barebones plan would probably work just fine. I see lots of posts in the VPS Offers area but most have no replies and are companies I've never heard of so just looking for some recommendations for or against any of the possible people. Thanks!

What is your budget for this cheap VPS? If you want reliable VPS, there there is a price for it. I am sure you can start with basic VPS but it depends on what kind of specs do you expect.

There are many shared hosting providers that also offer Remote MySQL access, you don't really have to go for a VPS if you don't want to. And if you need only a barebones package, it will be a lot cheaper, too.

Cheap... You can check lowendtalk for cheap VPS (some hosts created custom plans for LET). But I would recommend you to base on your requirements. I mean- calculate how much you need and then check related offers and based on that create price range you are interested in.

I can point out that vps hosting market is becoming more and more competitive, so there are trusted vps brands that offer vps hosting account starting from $5/mo. Any server location requirements? Do you need Linux or Windows VPS?

I'm assuming the shared host provider only has MySQL configured to accept local connections, or has it blocked on the firewall. Smart idea, don't blame them at all. Beware once you do this, the latency will make things somewhat annoying, but you could use DigitalOcean, or BuyVM.net or ramnode.com

I only pay $25/yr now because the site is so small. Adding a dedicated IP will cost me $2/mo which is another $24 so it will go up to $50/yr. If I can do everything for that same price, or even less, that'd be ideal. I don't WANT to have to go to VPS because I don't want to be in charge of managing my own server so I'm going to look for Shared Hosting that will allow me remote access to the databases since that would be much easier.

vps price is depends on specification, server location and level of support. MySQL remote access available on majority of shared hosting, some disable such function due too security risk. Based on your comments, you provider is trying to push you to their VPS service.

Your best bet is to review the offers section here and directly contact a number of providers, explain your situation and take it from there. You probably won't find remote MySQL listed on any of their sites. Good luck to you, sir.

If you want remote access to your database, you are going to have to cough up more money. It's not offered under normal shared hosting plans.
