Suggestions for upgrading VPS

Posted by threetowner, 08-19-2016, 01:38 PM
Hi there I've a few queries relating to my current VPS server - I'm a virtual novice with little server knowledge, so a managed VPS is essential. I've had my current VPS from Future Hosting for the past few years (VM5 80Gb, London-based - $50pm) which is running CentOS 5.11 and I've been very happy with their service, and prompt responses to tickets. However, WHM and CPanel are now giving advisory notices that they need to be upgraded to CentOS 7, and my disk is running at around 88% full. My server consists mainly of a large phpbb forum (approx 30Gb data) and and handful of wordpress sites. The new Future Hosting package for the same size disk is SSD5 at $70pm ignoring any discounts, and for their top package (100Gb) is $80pm, both of which are quite a jump for my budget. I have a backup script which takes a complete server backup and stores it externally on Amazon S3. However, that backup is essentially doubling the data on the server. Without it, I'd have loads of free space. So, my questions are: a) Do I need to look at an upgrade to run the latest server software? b) Do I need to have the S3 backup, and if so, is there any way of saving it incrementally directly onto S3 without it taking up capacity on my server? c) Future Hosting have their own Future Protect backups - would that be reliable in the event of needing to access a file from backup? d) If not, then are there any better options for a 100Gb server that cost less than $80pm Thanks Stuart

Stuart, You have come to the right place! In regards to Centos 7 and cPanel. You can use CentOS 6 if you want, it still has long ways to go, but now cPanel is requiring a 64 BIT operating system to take advantage of new installations + upgrades. You are probably on 32 bit now. I believe you can still have the same VPS, just get a new one with the newest Operating System and cPanel. You dont need to upgrade to handle it. Regarding the S3 backup, its not needed but it is recommended. I believe cPanel first has to generate a backup on your server and then move it over to S3. Many providers have their own backups, but in my opinion, always have your own somewhere. - Daniel

try CPremote for back ups its an incremental system that only backs up the changed files and stores them on a separate server like you are doing now there is no need to store the back up on your server as well try Acunett http://www.acunett.com/#server_sync for back up storage
