Choke/Lag Help Pls

Posted by Think Tank Networks, 07-04-2007, 06:16 PM
My dedicated server has been choking/lagging the past month or so. I sent my colo some tracerts and they said the problem is on my end. The server is a dedicated game server machine, im running 9 servers on it. No more then 3 servers are full at any one time and the maximum amount of bandwidth that has ever been used at any one time was 5 MB. My bandwidth limit is 100 Mbits, so it can't be a bandwidth limitation problem. I was thinking maybe my firewall is blocking some packets (i have stateful packet inspection enabled). Is there any kind of tests i can do to figure out what exactly is happening? (aside from tracerts, which dont really pinpoint the problem).

The SPI firewall shouldn't have any noticeable effect on the performance... at least from my own experience. What you could do is post a large test file to have people download, along with providing the IP address for pings & traceroutes. Also, what OS are you running?

I won't post the ip cause im scared of hackers. I'm running windows server 2003 enterprise 180-day demo.

I'm not too familiar with Windows Servers in general, so I can't offer any advise in that area. When you sent in the traceroutes, did they show high latency? I assume you also did a number of ping tests, did they show any packets timing out?

Since you are running Windows Server, start getting familiar with the performance counters relevant to your usage. You need to know that your server is up to scratch, and then, that your network is up to scratch. What do your players say? .

The server is more than enough for what im running. Ive never seen cpu usage go above 30% Here's the server specs: Dual Intel Xeon 3.0Ghz Dual Core 2GB Ram OC-192 Connection [ 100 Mbit Bandwidth (12MB per second) ] The processor also has hyperthreading, so theres 8 virtual cpu's (each game server is running off its own cpu) Occasionally all the servers spike. On average my ping is 15 to 30 on the servers, but during these lag spikes my ping sky rockets to 100 and over. It's as if the server is sending/receiving more packets than it can handle. Odd thing is, about a month ago i did not have this problem. And not much has changed since then in terms of game servers im hosting. One thing i did notice though; the colo has 400% more servers hosted then when i first signed up - could it be that they are overloading the network? They say they aren't but they could just be lying.

I'm running smokeping on my servers and so far in the little time that it has been running all my servers have been encountering an average of 10% packet loss. Are there are tweaks i can run on the server to reduce packet loss? (registry modifications, etc.). Should i run "TCP Optimizer" (its a program that tweaks ethernet settings)? Here are my current TCP settings: Last edited by Think Tank Networks; 07-08-2007 at 07:28 PM.
