Hiya, In regards to firewall software could you recommend some examples for both linux and windows host servers. Thanks

Regarding Linux I recommend you ConfigServer Security & Firewall (csf)

For windows, setup RAS packet filters. If you search on that exact phrase you will find details on how to do this. Or, just look in the online help. It is shipped as a standard part of Windows server since NT4.

Use built-in windows firewall which is good one and will not effect machine performance.

To me , maybe we sholud use ISA server in Windows server. Well...it really not easy to administration, isnt it?

TenFu, If you're running Linux, then check http://www.rfxnetworks.com/apf.php It doesn't slow your server down at all, as it uses the built-in IPtables functionality. Regards, Carl

Posted by Fernis, 07-07-2007, 01:49 AM

Dear TenFu, Check below link. http://www.kerio.com Best Regards.

The best firewall softwares for windows servers: F-prot & Kaspersky also kerio and Trend are good. Thanks

Posted by plumsauce, 07-07-2007, 02:42 AM
The ras packet filters are better than both the builtin firewall and kerio. F-prot, kapersky, and trendmicro have nothing to do with firewalling.

Sorry, It's my mistake , I thought what's the best virus prot. BTW, anti-virus is an extra layer of security. I dont use Windows server most of the time, but i do prefer the built-in firewall it's simple and can filter and control the ports. Regards,

TenFu, What is your server OS? For linux, I suggest IPTABLES, APF and BFD as firewalls. You may want to install softwares such as Tripwire, chkrootkit, Snort+SnortSnarf+OinkMaster, IPTables Log Analyzer, SWATCH, etc. to provide you with further security.

Another vote for CSF if you're on Linux. A lot better than APF in my opinion, and have a very easy to use GUI for cPanel

CSF is much easier to use than APF and updated much more often.
