Problem receiving mail
Posted by ChrisF79, 08-22-2007, 03:11 PM |
Greetings:
A few days ago I started having some people tell me that they can't send email to me. Basically, they get a permanent failure. It is very hit or miss though as I'm still getting some mail and not others.
There are a few things that I don't know if they could be contributing factors.
1.) I'm using GMail to check my POP accounts on my webserver.
2.) I have been receiving this message when CPanel runs it's updates at night. The version of perl you are running (v5.8.1) is too old. There are known problems that cannot be worked around with this version of perl. It is HIGHLY recommended that you upgrade to v5.8.5 or later. Any module install failures should be ignored until perl has been upgraded as some modules will not be able to install with this version of perl.
3.) I noticed the WHM interface is updated so maybe something upgraded and broke.
I'm running a Cpanel/Redhat server over at ThePlanet if it matters.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
Chris

1) POP and SMTP are unrelated in this case so GMail shouldn't matter.
2) Unrelated but you should upgrade.
3) Very possible.
But what you should do first is check the last few lines of /var/log/mail.log (or whatever log file your SMTP server uses) as that will be the most help.

Are you getting mail otherwise? Meaning from other addresses or is nothing getting through to your domain email at all?

I'm getting mail sometimes and sometimes not. Meaning, my girlfriend today emailed me and I received it. A few people from my office sent emails and I received those. However, I didn't receive an email from a Realtor I was working with (her's had permanent failure) and I didn't receive one from my girlfriend's mom either.
I looked at /var/log/maillog and saw a bunch of lines like this:

Look for the ones from senders you know couldn't send. If your server was unreachable, it would fail after a few days. If it fails right after sending, it's probably some configuration issue on either end or your mail server's IP was labelled as spam so that's why it isn't being received. If that were the case, the sender would get a clear message saying so.
Try to see if you can get a copy of the e-mail from the mail server that couldn't deliver. It should say what type of error resulted in the permanent failure.

I took a look but I didn't see either person's email address in the maillog. I used grep to search for it.

Bad news. I did a "cat /var/log/exim_mainlog | grep -i elaine" to see the errors with that one certain sender that had permanent failure. This is what I see but I need someone to help me make sense of it.

Looks like comcast is blocking it for spam, I had the same problem with charter filtering stupid keywords that would prevent me from even sending an abuse email or alike, I was going to ask maybe your ip was blacklisted and could have gotten blocked that way too.
