MSSQL Express 2005 instead of MSSQL 2005 ?

Hello, I`ve just got a new Windows 2003 Web Edition box and now I`m going to install a database server on that. MSSQL 2005 license would prices 270$/mo for me, So thats not possible to use it because of its price. I`m not sure if MSSQL Express 2005 or MSDE (which are free) can handle all requirements of ASP.NET programmers or not. Is there any limitations for major scripts on those? or will those make any doubts for programmers? Please share your experiences and suggestions. * I`m going to install "Hosting Controller" on that box. Thanks guys! Merry Christmas

there's a db size limit on MSDE, I believe 5GB maximum size.

From the features list you can see that you are limited to one CPU / 1GB RAM / 4GB database. This is considered a development database, not a production database.

If that's the case, then why do so many consider it as a production platform - including hosts.

The term "production" is somewhat fluid. I would never consider a 1GB address space production. YMMV. Greedy hosters are a dime a dozen and they will gladly sell you whatever it is you think you want. If you've got a small site with small requirements you could probably use this without many problems. Like a crack dealer Microsoft gives you your first hit for free. Once you get hooked you will pay dearly to upgrade to a "production" server.

For the most part Express will work just fine with your .Net development. The limitations are mostly at the enterprise level (analysis, clustering, etc) and probably stuff you wont need. Data import/export is also not avaialable with Express. http://www.microsoft.com/sql/prodinf...-features.mspx

Hi, Thanks for your sharing. That will be a Web Hosting Server, So I want to know if MSSQL Express or MSDE makes any problems developers for common usage. * Thats not a problem if that only support servers with 1 CPU, and 1GB Ram MAX, We can get about 3-4 servers with 270$/mo, But I dont know if 4GB/database is low for common usages or not. * Sorry, I`m not creazy, I`m just a newbie in Microsoft Products. Another question: Why webhosts have restricted limitation on MSSQL databases No. in their Hosting Plans? If there is 4GB/database limitation, So they should not be worry about No. of databases, they should be worry about database size only.

Like all databases, MSSQL works better the more ram it has - otherwise it can easily get bogged down waiting on disk activity. With express edition, the 1GB RAM limitation is the biggest problem, particularly if you intend to run multiple databases on the same server. Note that the 1 CPU/1GB RAM are not limitations on what servers you can install it on, it just won't use more than that if its available. The lack of SQL Server Agent may be an issue for some programmers as applications often depend on it for scheduled tasks. It also limits your backup options as you would have to use an externally scheduled SQL script. Also the lack of profiler means if it is going slow you won't be able to find out which users are causing the problem unless you by one copy of standard edition to run the profiling from remotely.
