Video encoding server ? (urgent)

Posted by _terror_, 09-14-2016, 03:15 AM
Hi, after getting my 1gbps streaming server from leaseweb, Now i need a encoding server for my video streaming website. I noticed that there powerful cpu currently won't fit my budget so i'll try WHT and i need this by today if possible. I need as best as possible cpu under my budget I need good GPU as well (question: is gpu important in encoding ?) I need good ram probably 64 ? I need okay storage like 480gb ssd would do I need around 30-50tb of bandwidth Preferred location EU and my budget is around 200-250 usd. Last edited by _terror_; 09-14-2016 at 03:29 AM.

Try ovh but they have setup fee

30TB of bandwidth is not a lot of, so please check the dedicated server offers section, here you will find a needed provider for sure.

GPU is important? No. You need as much Ghz per core as you can get. For encoding you can try to look at i7 ( the real xeon CPU is not important ). Budget is good if you go with a budget provider.

what kind of processor you are looking for E3 or E5 ?

GPU depends on the platform you use also for encoding. However as mentioned above i7's are pretty awesome for encoding compared to an equivalent Xeon CPU based on the price / performance ratio. There are many providers who have GPU-based servers too. Try OVH or Nforce

myloc.de, webtropia.com and hetzner.de should be fine for you GPU encoding is shіt, the quality is so much worse against CPU based.

You could also look at the Dual X5650/X5670's, they have a high clock frequency but are also a previous generation so older. The dual E5's would probably also do best, although your budget is pretty limited then I think if you want an extremely powerful one with high clock frequency.

The proper solution really comes down to the encoding application being used and thus why you have a wide variety of answers. Here are a few facts to consider: 1) GPU Encoding (i.e. encoding via CUDA, Intel QuickSync, or the AMD Equivalent) will always be faster (in particular CUDA); 2) Some applications support GPU + CPU encoding (CUDA + QuickSync) which will always be the fastest depending on the encoding type (H.265/HEVC for example) 3) Clock speeds matter in an equal core processor (i.e. Core i7 versus Xeon E3 which both have 4 cores + HT) so opt for higher clock speeds in both CPU, CPU/GPU Hybrid, and GPU Scenarios; 4) Core count matters no matter what (whether GPU or CPU). Most encoding applications are multithreaded for both CPU and GPU 5) Shockingly, Core i7s will outperform Xeons in encodes unless the Xeon system is equipped with 24+ Cores (including HT Cores) I have seen people throw Xeons at things a Core i7 can do faster and I have seen people throw GPUs at things that Xeons can do faster. It all comes down to the encoding software capabilities. The best performance will be offered by CUDA GPUs + Xeon followed by CUDA GPUs + Core i7. After that, it really depends on the workload. Take for example, my workstation's Core i7-3770K clocks at 5GHz and is paired with an nVidia GPU. It can encode faster than E5-1650 which is a much newer Xeon processor without the help of the GPU for the encoding application I use. If I enable GPU/CPU Hybrid encoding with CUDA and QuickSync, the much more modern E5 doesn't stand a chance. So there is a lot to consider and it would help to know what application you are using for your encoding environment.

Great advice by everyone. Since you marked this URGENT yesterday, I'm wondering which package configuration you went with, or are you still searching?

I went with hetzner actual server. i7 3930 , 64gb ram 1gbps and 4x240ssd. quite cheap it is

Hi _terror_, Thanks for choosing Hetzner Online. We hope you enjoy your server! --Katie, Marketing

I know you have found the solution but you can perhaps consider Amazon's Elastic Servers, since they are perfect for video transcoding. A similar cheaper service is NeuCoder and they have started out recently I do not have any experience with them though.
