Does CentOS support RAID 10?
Posted by WoodiE55, 03-05-2008, 06:52 PM |
I'm looking at buying a new Dell server which will hopefully be setup in a RAID10 using (4) 146GB 15k SCSI drives.
However I've read somewhere that Linux does not support RAID10 - is this true? If I buy the server will I not be able to use RAID 10?

That is not true. CentOS and the linux kernel have support for RAID 10.

RAID10 works fine with CentOS.

Thanks guys - it's a relief knowing that Linux will support RAID 10 w/o any problems.

And, if the RAID is done in hardware, what the OS supports is completely irrelevant.

Is that true? I always thought that the kernel need to know how to communicate with the hardware for the hardware to work. In other word, the OS need to support the hardware in order for the hardware to work. Otherwise, there is no such thing as driver.

Yes, as long as the OS supports the controller then it will work. It doesn't matter if the OS knows how to do RAID 10, because the controller handles that for the OS and the OS just sees it as a single drive.

AH that is a better answer.
As long as the OS support the controller hardware, RAID 10 or RAID 5 or RAID whatever does not matter. So go and check if the hardware is linux friendly or not.

in case you are interested with raid hardware, take a look at 3ware cards. All our servers use 3ware without any trouble, and all they are running CentOS

We've had good lucks with Areca's on Debian.

Dell's servers are built for Linux (afaik) so the hardware will be compatible with linux
