Server configuration
Posted by thom89, 09-27-2016, 04:23 AM |
Hi all,
I am trying configure my hetzner server to use all hard drives in raid 0 but every time I set the quotas for example
/ 10G
/boot 512M
/swap 2G
/home all
But after reboot / has 1.9TB
Am I doing something wrong or is this normal for a server with 4 drives totalling 16TB

You need to set it up with GPT to format larger drives.

Why don't contact your provider instead and ask why. They can see your current server as well and explain what you need to do with that. I'm not expert but I would go that way.

Possibly will have to go down that route but would have thought maybe someone had the same issue as on here will probably be faster than their support response time

Well took the advice of maik89 and hetzner reinstalled the OS with full space going to /home and not 2tb to /

Sometimes going directly to the provider gets you what you want quicker. Kudos to Hetzner for solving your issue.

That is a good idea, but how would you find someone with the same problem. I mean which steps you will have to complete?

Well if someone ran into the same issue when configuring the raid incase they did the same as me and missed something or did it wrong and corrected it

Use GPT. That's essential for larger partitions. fdisk is not workable for larger than 2 TB.

One side note - make sure you have backup/copies of all data - it's always good idea, but especially if you have "RAID" 0, which is not really RAID in Redundancy aspect, so failure of any of those 4 drives would mean you lose all data.
Unless you're putting static copy of some content or really need the performance and full size - RAID5 (12 GB with redundancy) or RAID10 (8 GB with speed and redundancy) might be better option.

Hi,
It is possible to configure the partition from the Hetzner panel itself. I was able to configure software RAID and install the OS without any problem. You may please note that the RAID level0 is not all recommended for a production environment. I prefer to use RAID1 or RAID10.

If you are having 16TB of disk space space, then why are you giving only 10 GB for "/" I would suggest you plan the partition configuration properly for future use, as "/" may get full pretty easily and then you will again have to look for other options to move the files from here and there.
/boot --> 1GB
Swap --> 1.5 times the RAM or equal if high capacity.
/ --> All space.
Again, as I said, you go to be dam sure about what the server is going to play a role and then plan your disk management. You said you are configuring RAID0 on it, that is good to get complete disk space, but that will be even more harmful if one of those disk goes bad, you will have to face data loss in that case.
