Dedicated with lots of storage

Posted by dsme, 10-16-2016, 07:35 PM
Hi, I'm looking for a dedicated server which has lots of storage for cheap. Was looking at Kimsufi 11.99 i3 with 2tb and unlimited transfer was ideal but not enough disk space to have a mirrored copy of my data. Ideally looking at 4tb minimum Location anywhere in Europe really Purpose is for plex, and a basic website Expected data transfer would be no more than 10-20gb a month after initial upload of data. Thanks

Take a look at Hetzner auctions: https://robot.your-server.de/order/market They've got servers with lots of space, quite cheap.

So is $11.99/m your budget.....? If you have under $20/m budget you'll be limited to 1TB-2TB disk on low end providers, can't get more than what you have. If you have a budget of $70/m+ you can easily get 4-8TB+ of RAID storage.

If Europe is the preferred location for you .. you can try either leasweweb or leaseweb's resellers ... what budget you have set for this server so far ?

Maybe get 2 of that server? Of course, don't expect more for that single budget.

Ideally no more than 22 euros as that would deliver the same end result. I guess you can't get 2x2tb with Kimsufi?

Does the RAID mirroring is essential to you? I believe you can find good deals with 1 x 4TB drive.

It doesn't even need to be a raid setup, I don't mind having to create a cron job to copy the data to the secondary drive so I have an exact copy? I was looking for some sort of storage solution as well and attach these drives as a network drive, however I'm not sure how that would affect plex performance?

RAID is not a backup. I would recommend getting two of those instead for true backup of the data.

It seems like the workaround would be to procure two servers, as the real purpose of backups is disaster recovery.

Why not just use a backup hosting account with SSH, FTP, Rsync access? Should work out cheaper.

Do you have any suggestions?

Why is your budget so small? 22.00 for a massive 4TB of storage space? What is happening? Too many low budget providers have given the impression that it's sustainable, and now everyone expects it! Oh dear. I'd check the Backup Services forum at WHT where you'll find lots of providers offering such plans, though you may need to contact a few providers for a custom quote of 4TB+. Not matter who you choose, I doubt 22.00 is going to be enough. Try to get 1Gbps for faster upload/download speeds, a good 4GB+ RAM, SAS rather than SATA will help too. Good luck finding such deal. I hope 22.00 isn't your maximum budget for 4TB storage.

Why should I pay more if I can get it for that amount with Kimsufi? I don't need 1Gbps, 100mbit is enough. 4GB RAM is probably too much and SATA will do that job fine.

In that case, you should be able to find something cheaper/better in Backup Services at WHT and you'd get 1Gbps rather than 100Mbps which is 10x slower! All the best.
