I am not sure if I can be much help, but seems like the file don't exist.
What I experienced before was the file pulling from a clients computers company instead of the server if it works for you and no one else then the file is on your client computer.

home/XXX/public_html/http"
This seems strange, how have you got your DNS setup? Are you using mod_userdir, or, are you manually editing the httpd.conf file? Are you running a control panel?

What is the entry for the virtual server in your httpd.conf?

Correct me if I am wrong, and I am wrong often...
But if you dont have mod_userdir turned on... a user will not be able to access a http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/~xxx URL... no?
Also...
Do you have your forum in your site's root directory? I think you have mod_userdir turned on, or you would not even see the request...
Or does the forum reside in a subdirectory within your /http directory? say /http/forum
If so, showthread.php may not exist in the /http directory.
