3rd party processors to merchant transition

Although it may be a bit premature of me in asking this question, I've been wondering about this for some time. How is the transition from using a 3rd party processor to implementing a merchant account like(the task of transferring accounts of clients)? Do you folks suggest getting a merchant account at the beginning? Since most merchant accounts can be quite costly to get, do most resellers stay with a 3rd party-processor or fork out whatever funds are needed to get a SSL cert and a merchant account?

if you think you want a real merchant account you would be best to go for one in the beginning because as far as i know their is no way to get the credit card details of your existing customers from companies like revecom.

Hmm, the reason I'm asking this is because the cost of getting a merchant account plus having an SSL cert installed can be quite costly for a start-up. Certainly there must be a reseller who has grown substantially and decided that a it would be more benificial in getting their own merchant account than remaining with a 3rd party processor? Yes, I'm the ambitious sort

Hmm, are there no other comments on this issue? Have no resellers grown substantially that they felt they needed to upgrade from a 3rd party-processor to getting their own merchant account? Or have you just stuck to the 3rd party processor because you didn't want to go through the hassle of transferring all your accounts?

In my newbie opinion, I would stick to a 3rd party until you get the volume that justifies the transfer. When transferring, even if you were to offer your clients "one-month free" for re-signing on the new system, you would be saving money over the option of having to pay those monthly fees from the start. If you are offering a good service, I don't think your clients would mind the extra sign-up needed. Best of luck Antonio

Hi, I resell space for a few companies and take it from me that the amount of hassle you get from changing from a 3rd party to your own account is huge! Not from the users though. From the 3rd party provider, or atleast that was my experience from Ibill. Another consideration is that you may need to find a way to get users details from them and store them securely. Cheers.

That's a good idea! I'll keep that in mind I'm trying to learn from you experienced folks so would greatly appreciate it if you could share what methods you used.
