Deciding on host ...

Posted by splashscreen, 04-12-2002, 03:28 PM
We're deciding on a host for our web production company. So far, we've narrowed it down to the following choices: a. Stay with our current host, BlueBoxInternet, from whom we have a Reseller Pro package. b. WiseHosting.net's Reseller Platinum package. c. SplashHost's Gold Reseller plan, or d. Voxtreme's Advanced Reseller plan. Must admit that a big selling point of b, c, and d is the CPanel, and larger disk space. Any feedback anyone can give us would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Uptime is job one! That is the slogan every Web Hosting company should be using and the slogan everyone should look for. Being as I just made this posting, please give me time to update my Web pages. It is something though, that I base 90% of my choice on. After all, if your site is not up... the rest don't matter. I would advise you to start tracking the Uptime for where you are now and whoever you are thinking of going with. There are many ways to do it, but one of the handiest third party, unbiased tools, I can find is Netcraft. Used as guide, along with what other tools you use, it helps to determine reliabilty. Not all Hosting companies have the sites they host on the same Server as their own Domain Name, so you have to do some digging sometimes. After Uptime comes Support. If you have problem and it takes days to fix, where does that leave you; especially if you have clients (whose sites are also affected by said problem) that are coming to "you" for answers, but you have none to give. Sending some Emails, check out their Forum (or if they even have one), do research (see that "Search" button at the time of this page? ) and see what kind of "feeling" you get. It's been said us guys have trouble dealing with our "feelings" yet we more apt than not, to make decisions based on our "gut" feeling alone. When the "gut" feeling is backed up with solid facts and good business logic, we are entering the realm of a solid business decision. Features to Cost Now come price. Everyone has their price! If you don't know how much you have to spend, how to you know what you can get. By going Shopping, that's how. Presumable one has a "list" of desired features and while Shopping, will be able to hone that list to "essentials" and "be nice to have" features. After evaluating features to cost, you know who to approach to focus on the first two items I mentioned. That is when the make or break decisions start to happen and you go from a list, to a short list, to 3 potentials. I may not have provided dinner, but hopefully, this will teach one how to feed themselves for life. Not sure if that's any kind of answer you were looking for. This post just happen to catch me in a philosophical mood.

I'm at Voxtreme. For the most part, support is fast, although it has been getting a little slow lately. Matt at Voxtreme assured me that this is a temporary thing, related to things like the installation of an online trouble ticket system. Uptime has been very good, except for some hacking attacks, which have pretty much stopped (they were caused by reseller's demo cpanel accounts, which are no longer allowed), and a DDoS attack which affected many separate hosts. But overall, I've had a pretty good experience with them.

Hi splashscreen from the hosts that you have listed there I will prefer to stay with Blueboxinternet they are extremely stable their support is great and they use plesk which is a plus. I would also like to recommend datahosts.net they offer alot of disk space just like the other providers but they run plesk in stead of CPANEL which SUCKS big time. I had an account with blueboxinternet until I transfered over to datahosts.net and I have no regrest everything is going great for me great support, great speed, great uptime and costs are verry good I hope this helps.

well i just left mchost due to not so great customer support/service and slow connections , i had lots of troble with email and so on.... i dont wanna bash them , because as it turns , many people love them , i might have just had a bad experience , but i did move to splashhost , is all i can say is that im happy with everything , alan answered all my questions prior to sell in a chat ,which is nice because alan is available alot on his human click chat program thing, and i did bug him alot . He just got a new server , he even waited to make a sell until he was ready with his new machine , which i found to be very honest and not just shoving me on a over crowded server (how many other hosts on this forum stop taking sales to insure quality of service, as opposed to sticking you on a server with 700 other sites?) , the server im on is a dual pentium and scsi , 2 chips are better then one =] , the connectivity is good , i have chose of cpanels , everything is great , service, speed and price all in one package .Works for me

Only if you're a downtime addict.

Why am I here since I have signed up with Voxtreme few weeks ago? Because within these few week there was two major downtime and looking for alternative here. And the latest one is happening eight hour ago as i typing this and the server is still not up yet(and not I don't type that slow...) & they didn't even provide any notice on the forum or helpdek. Service has been great and I hate to bash them but I feel that I have gone berserk by all the phone call ringing since this morning at 9am and its a monday. Imagine this happening to you & your client and you'll probably break-down with frusfration. Leason to share: Good reponses time in minor problem is good but the most important is UPTIME, UPTIME & UPTIME. If the reseller has little control over this, not matter how good their support is, its useless. What Website Rob wrote is very true. Dammit, there goes the ringing tone again....................
