What do you think of hosting companies saying they have 24hr tech support? Is it really true, or is it like saying you get unlimited bandwidth?
24hr support = unlimited bandwidth

VenturesOnline has 24 hours tech support. They arent a one man operation, and Ive filed support tickets at all times of the night and morning and have always gotten replies in a matter of minutes. My guess would be that the more established companies that just arent one person have a more "real" 24/7 support.

I think most of the hosting companies are small. It's very hard to have 24 hours tech support. But hosting companies need 24 hours reboot, especially they are sleeping. That's the reason I want to use a reseller account.
Customers can wait non-emergency questions. But they cannot wait a sever down.
Long-time-sever-down surely lose customers.

Any other users have an opinion on this?

While most smaller companies cannot provide true 24/7 coverage, they should be able to have 24/7 monitoring software in place that will alert them of any outage that may happen.

For each person a company hire they need to have money to pay that person.
And one person is more expensive than a dedicated server. For less then $100 / month you can have a 5 minutes monitoring services that will even wake you up in case of emergency.
Yes it is great to have 24/7 but you have to pay for it. Also if you're using a small company the servers are in NOC's and there is always 24/7.
Good luck

Well on my personally-hosted sites, I advertise and offer 24 hour tech support. I have my server monitor software, and support + ticket + emergency addresses routed/forwarded to my cell phone (which has text messaging). I carry a laptop and am always within minutes of logging on to help when called.
hehe... last month I was on a 13-hour road trip and found myself pounding through the streets of Milwaukee looking for a public library so I could simply check that Apache had properly restarted. 40 minute divert on the trip, in the middle of a thunderstorm/downpour, and Apache was fine. LOL What a day THAT was!
I've received tickets in the middle of the night, or should I say the middle of my sleeping (which isn't always at night, LOL) and I haul my butt out of bed/fire up my laptop to answer them on the spot. Nobody waits.
So yes, 24/7 support is possible with smaller hosts. The question is, are you happy being that closely tied to a computer all the time? I don't mind, but it might not work for everybody.
