Raid 1 Secondary Hard drive failed
Posted by ServerXY, 10-22-2016, 08:52 PM |
Hello,
I am using dedicated server from unmanaged servers provider. When i signed up they installed OS and created Raid 1 for me with 2 drives.
Everything was working fine and i am running there cpanel i have frontend experience about cpanel firewall security etc and backend lil bit.
Now my server was not responding and when i asked my provider to reboot they rebooted and i got two emails..
1:
This is an automatically generated mail message from mdadm
running on host.xyz.com
A DegradedArray event had been detected on md device /dev/md0.
Faithfully yours, etc.
P.S. The /proc/mdstat file currently contains the following:
Personalities : [raid1]
md0 : active raid1 sda1[0]
255936 blocks super 1.0 [2/1] [U_]
md1 : active raid1 sda2[0]
976373760 blocks super 1.1 [2/1] [U_]
bitmap: 8/8 pages [32KB], 65536KB chunk
unused devices:

=============================
When i asked my provider please check they said we will only run test but we will not provide support regarding software and OS etc..
They said your hard drive sdb is failing if you will say we will replace it for you but you have to make settings your self...
I dont know what to do now i am confused. I have all corporate customers there and i dont want to lose any data or anything..
They provided link https://community.spiceworks.com/how...uration-mdraid but i am not sure if i go with it and i am scared if anything goes wrong please help me...
I shall be thankful to you.

You have corporate customers and yet you went for unmanaged server? If I would be your client, I would be afraid to host with you.
You need to know what to do if you go for unmanaged server otherwise pay your provider to manage it for you.
This is just some of the issue that you will handle yourself but there will be more especially when it comes to security when it comes to unmanaged server.

Sir we are not earning too much and it is start of business thats why we cant afford managed servers..

Then my recommendation to you is not to go for a dedicated server and downgrade it so you can go for a managed server or just reseller hosting, etc....
Now, my question is, what happened if you lost all your data? What will you do?

I have all users backup to my remote ftp server which i have setup, i can order another server and transfer accounts there but it will take time like server ordering, cpanel installation security firewall, then move accounts from one server to another it will take time thats why i want to fix this issue...

Isn't it hard to ask google"Replacing a Failed Hard Drive In A Software RAID1 Array"?

This doesn't really make sense to me. Aside from what @net already mentioned (seriously, look into how you manage corporate customers) - there's something else off here.
You mention running RAID 1. You say 1 disk has failed. RAID 1 survives that - the fault tolerance means that a drive in a 2-drive RAID 1 can fail, and the server should still operate. Granted it'd be in a degraded state, but it should still operate. Replacing the drive would (with any RAID card I know of) start a re-build process immediately.
Sounds like you may have had an actual RAID failure here, not a disk failure?
Either way, this is way too risky to be asking for help on forums about. Pay someone with access to fix this for you. The downtime alone of waiting for replies here would be out of hand - and the risk of doing something wrong in case the data is salvageable is severe.
You contributed literally nothing to the topic. Posts like these drive me mad

Hello,
Nop things are.working fine still my server access is fine and everything working from disk 1.. Only disk 2 is failing which needed to replace and set array..

You should replace the disk as soon as possible or at least remove it from the system. Depending on the failure, you can end up corrupting the other disk due to bad data from the failed disk.
RAID 1 should survive a single disk failure no mater what, but there are plenty of times it doesnt and most of the time its from a bad disk being left in the system for two long.

You have following options
1 : Replace your Hard Drive ASAP
2: Get paid support from your hosting company
3: You can hire a 3rd party admin / Server management company
4: If you have cPanel just open a cPanel support ticket. They are assisting for cPanel customers for free

No they will assist you. Just open a support ticket. They have a complimentary support service.

Hi,
cPanel or CloudLinux will only assist you with the issue on your server related to their products. I doubt that they will assist you in RAID sync..
You have a RAID-1 setup, so there is nothing to worry, all you have to do is get a new disk, and setup same partitions on the disk and attach those partitions to the RAID array, the sync will automatically start.

Hire a server management company for one time to rebuild the array for you after replace the faulty drive.

@ServerXY : You are taking too much risk with corporate customers as your clients, but still it would be better if you a backup which offers bare metal restores like R1Soft or CDP.me . If you cannot do it yourselves, hire a server management company. But you must think of an option of unmanaged + server management or managed itself. Sometimes it may come cheaper than getting a managed server from providers.
If you want to do it yourself, check the below links. Read them all, get an understanding on the process and do it. However make sure that you have a backup - MOST IMPORTANT.
https://www.howtoforge.com/replacing..._a_raid1_array
https://www.supportsages.com/blog/20...software-raid/
https://community.spiceworks.com/how...uration-mdraid ( does mention about grub re installation which is not mentioned in the first two links )

If you can't afford to go with a good provider to provide quality services to your corporate clients and if you can't earn money from that, why are you still in business? It is not better to leave it?
I hope it is not a kimsufi ( or similar level ) services

why isn't anyone helping this guy?
you just need to replace the failed disk (sdb), copy the partition table scheme from sda, add the second disk to RAID and run grub-install on it:
1. sfdisk -d /dev/sda > sda_part.txt
2. sfdisk /dev/sdb < sda_part.txt
3. mdadm /dev/md0 -a /dev/sdb1
4. mdadm /dev/md1 -a /dev/sdb2
5. grub-install /dev/sdb

OP already got the instruction from his DC and here. But he worried doing this. So everyone is suggesting to hire server management company.

all right, got it.
OP, there's nothing to be afraid of, ask the DC to replace sdb and then post here the output of 'fdisk -l'

Agreed - either do this or hire a third party management vendor to help you get out of this situation, just don't wait long as you'll be tempting fate.
