A Record to Alias

A Record to Alias Hi All : this is my first post. I have built a new website (ASP) for a friend. Their current domain "hissite.co.uk" is on another server - they want their email to stay with that hosting company. I have created their new site on another server using a similar domain name "hissite2.co.uk". The server is a shared hosting account so the IP isn't dedicated. Question Making a change to the A Record asks for an IP address but doesn't work when pointing to a shared hosting server which holds lots of domains. I don't want to change the CName or set up a 301 Redirect. I was told that if I add an alias of the main domain (hissite.co.uk) on the new server the change to the A record on the current server, although the IP address is pointing to a shared hosting server will work. Can anyone confirm that or offer advice ?? Much appreciated ....

It doesn't work immediately. It needs some hours to propagate. Change the ip that the A record for * or www points to, to the new ip and then... just wait. Best thing to do though is change the TTL to a low value of one hour, and after 24 some hours change the ip of the site. This will change globally the site in one hour. __________________ PHP Code Repository | Worst Wide Web, now PR2

The solution of this problem is that you create a hosting account with the name of hissite.co.uk on the new server, which is the new shared account, instead of hissite2.co.uk. Just name it hissite.co.uk with no problems. Then, you may change the A record of hissite.co.uk to the new server IP. This way, the email will still be hosted on the old server and just the web will be moved to the new server. By the way, your solution will also work, I am just saying that you actually do not need the new name. But note that the alias meant is a web server alias not a DNS alias. __________________ Ahmed GhaziGPME Hosting, Advanced IT hosting services Last edited by gpme : 11-15-2008 at 09:20 AM.

remember that servers can be independent it just depends on the DNS record on where a domain traffic will need to resovle to. (A, CNAME or MX)
