Multiple Reseller Accounts

Posted by imitech, 06-05-2002, 03:53 PM
This may be a stupid question but here it goes; Is the following possible: Can I signup for a reseller account at two different hosting companies giving me two reseller accounts and point them all to the same nameserver i.e. both point to ns1.host.com and ns2.host.com? (Somehow I don’t think I can but I can’t convince myself! ) The reason I am asking this is that I want one reseller account at one company and a backup reseller at another company. Or would I have to point one to ns1.host.com and ns2.host.com and the other to ns1.host.net and ns2.host.net . I hope it makes sense as I have just confused myself and help would be much appreciated. There is a small problem with what you want to do. You can use the same domain if you want as you will just have nameservers setup as ns1.yourdomain.com (first reseller account) ns2.yourdomain.com (first reseller account) ns3.yourdomain.com (second reseller account) ns4.yourdomain.com (second reseller account) -Steven

Thanks for your help insiderhosting, do I have to let the company I buy the second reseller package from know that I want the nameservers ns3.yourdomain.com and ns4.yourdomain.com because by default they will give ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com. Am I right?

yes e-mail that company when you signup, or alternatively if they have a comments box on their order form put it there. -Steven

Well if you have access to DNS administration for your original host you could probably always manually type in the zone information there.. or am I confused?

If you want back up of your sites where email will go and sites will be served in case of your first server is down, two more sets of nameservers are not going to solve the problem. You can use ns1.host.com and ns2.host.com and put ns1 in the first server and ns2 in the second server and have the same DNS records in both the servers And your zone records should look like www A ip.of.server.1 www A ip.of.server.2 mail MX ip.of.server.1 MX pref 10 mail MX ip.of.server.2 MX pref 20 This should be in both servers So by default the first server will be queried and if ti fails the second server will be queried [same for email] This way you will have DNS , www and mail redundancy. But this wont work so easily for ecommerce or database sites [that is if the user is expected to enter some data into the data base] Cheers Balaji

yes, absolutely right. If you have access (add/delete/modofy zones) to first reseller account DNS server(s) application- you can easily set-up your client DNS records even if they are hosted from Moon. -)

phft - I'm looking at getting a server on the new Mars colony. That way I can get a good connection to the settlement on Saturn's 3rd moon.

What is the benefit of reselling for more than one company...? I was thinking that if you resell for Company A, that has good costs and good support, but not good bandwidth.. then you could go resell for another Company B.. that has good costs and really good bandwidth... would that even out ? and allow you to share the two packages... having good support from one Company A that doesnt exactly have the amount of bandwidth you need.. and having good bandwidth from the other Company B can this be done ? Making up for one companies bad with another companies good, to combine the two.. to help serve you better ? bah im confusing myself i better quit while im ahead.. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks

well the easy solution to this is not us ns1 ns2 as the name servers it can be any valid hostname you want to give it simply make the name servers green.yourdomain.foobar red.yourdomain.foobar or whatever else you want so you know what it is but wont confuse a end user when registering up updateing his domain. telling him put ns3 and ns4 hehehe

It's actually pretty smart.. he's going to devote his time into another company that can just dissappear at any second and he loses his life's spent time money and income........ dont you worry about this? you should.. it happens daily and has happened to me many times as I have tried making a living in this reseller world.. its not pretty and the fact is.. the runners of these things usually sell out, go bankrupt, or just dissappear or die.

If your host requires that you use ns* or dns* records and you have both the .net and .com version here's what I'd do: For your primary reseller acount just use: ns1.yourdomain.com ns2.yourdomain.com And for your secondary account use: ns1.yourdomain.net ns2.yourdomain.net .
