Moving Frontpage accounts
Hi,
What is the best way to move Frontpage accounts from one server (non-cp) to another (Cpanel or Plesk)?
I understand that using FTP may corrupt the FP server extensions; is rsync an option, or should the client always upload files to the new server from their FP software?
Is there any way to connect to a new server account (using FP) via the IP; before pointing the domain to the new server?
Thanks,
TMM

The way I have done this in the past (a very very long time ago), I just setup some sort of a subdomain or other external web accessible site with FrontPage extensions installed, and then published the site there from its current location. Then when the new site is setup you can publish from the temporary location to the new location. You can use a subweb as a temporary location as well. For our clients, we just used a system account we had setup in a private location, and used that as an intermediate location when they needed some help moving their sites. Though I suggest moving away from FrontPage, considering it was officially discontinued years ago, many people learned only FrontPage and are still using it for their site.
I do suggest that they work with the site on their computer and publish directly from there, but many did not start out that way, instead they started directly creating the site live on the internet, so it leaves them with portability issues, and questions like this.

As long as you install Fpage Extensions on the new blank sites before you copy the files over it should go smoothly. Just setup the same username/password for each sites Fpage Extensions on the new sites, then copy the files in (including all fpage folders) via any method.

I would not endorse moving files over via just any method, because FrontPage makes heavy use of special permissions, ownerships, and from one version to another and one implementation to another, so many things can change. Also a guaranteed issue would be with .htaccess files, which FrontPage uses for authentication on at least some implementations of FrontPage extensions. Transferring the files via other methods other than FrontPage can cause the site to loose all template, style, and theme aspects, or at least mess them up the next time the site is modified.
I am only speaking from the experiences I have been through, and FrontPage can get messy if you transfer a site using something other than FrontPage. Through many experiences helping customers move their FrontPage sites transparently to a new server, I have seen many issues.

Thanks for the input, appreciate it.
Jonathan, do I understand you correctly in that you recommend the following:
1) Create a new account (on a subdomain) with FP server extensions
2)Have the client publish from their local FP to it, and then check that the site works as it should
3) Make the necessary domain/IP changes in order for the site to work on the new server, on the origial domain
Thanks,

If the site is fully on their computer and they publish from their computer, that bypasses most of the issues I mentioned. It is good to have a backup though, if you want to have an intermediate location for the site to be published to. With FrontPage, it is always a good idea to check to make sure a fresh publish will work correctly. Your outline would work well, and for the most part I believe you understand me correctly.
