Which Java-friendly OS - you recommend?
I've been trying to use Windows 2008 and Jboss and I wasted loads of time.
Which Open Source OS do you recommend - Java friendly OS ?
Cheers

Basically, Java installation should be similar on all Linux distributions. I'm not sure about other Open Source operating systems, as FreeBSD, OpenSolaris etc....
My recomendation is Debian or CentOS.

Solaris tends to have slightly better performance than other *nix platforms with Java, which isn't surprising given Sun's involvement in both. Whether that's due to JVM tuning by Sun for Solaris or inherent OS affinity for Java, it's hard to say.
If you're using JBoss, something from the Redhat / Fedora / CentOS branch is probably the most widely used with that application server. My anecdotal experience is that *BSD variants tend to be less widely used than Solaris or Linux for Java, but they are certainly being used.
Ultimately, I would suggest that you make an OS choice based on factors not necessarily related to Java, as those differences are fairly trivial, but the other important factors such as your staff's experience, OS features, support (either paid or free mailing lists, forums, etc.), compatibility with your existing applications or hardware, etc.

CentOs / Redhat Enterprise works great in my experience, but then again so does every Linux install.
You can also use Ubuntu (which allows installation through apt-get)
Go with what you know.

Agreed 100%. Solaris does seem to work better with Java than other OSes (in fact, quite well), but staff experience and support should arguably play more into the decision.
