Email problems

Posted by MikeMike, 08-14-2009, 03:57 PM
I have two cpanel servers, centOS 5.3. One account on server-1 is not receiving emails from any account on server-2. That one account has no problem getting emails from anywhere else. Other accounts on server-1 are receiving emails from server-2 accounts without any problems. The DNS and MX are setup in godaddys total dns on the exact same way for server-1 accounts. In the mail log on server-1 I can see all incomming emails, but there are no signs of the emails from server-2. Spamassassin is disabled on server-1. How do I troubleshoot something like that?

when u are talking about accounts are you talking about domains? what does the mail log on server-2 say when it sends an email to the questioned account? try verifying your MX records using something like dig

Yes, I mean domains. The server2 log looks fine to me: and the dig MX: Server1 Server2

Make sure the domain of the account in question isn't buried somewhere int he configuration files of server2 (grep "domain.tld" -r /etc). If it is, remove it. Regards

im not an exim user but did i just read you mail logs correctly? It looked like it delivered the email for server1.com locally. i agree check you config maybe you have this domain somewhere aliased in your config files

You nailed it. Thank you!! I recently moved the domain to server1 from another server. Before I did that I transferred a copy over to server2 in case something went wrong. That copy was still on server 2 and everything was fine after I deleted it. I would never have expected the mail to behave that way. There must be way to avoid that though. Else I could get a reseller account on a shared host somewhere and create google.com and yahoo.com and aol.com etc.. and I would receive the mails send to those domains from everybody else hosted on that server

Glad it worked. There's a WHM option that can be checked to prevent adding common domains like those. See WHM -> Tweak Settings -> Prevent users from parking/adding common internet domains. It's checked by default so there shouldn't be a problem. Also uncheck WHM -> Tweak Settings -> "Allow Creation of Parked/Addon Domains that resolve to other servers ". Unfortunately, this option is enabled by default and it poses a security risk. Regards
