At what point would you go dedicated?

Posted by Taylor, 05-17-2003, 07:42 PM
Was wondering at what point most of you reccomend or did go to a dedicated server from a reseller account? Would you reccomend going to a ded right when your first reseller account is full or would it be better to repurchase multiple reseller accounts? Thanks

it depends on the ability to manage the server and money

When you are pulling in a lot of money, so that you can get a good account, with cpanel, and an admin.

what do you need to know to run a MANAGED Dedicated server?

if its fully managed you shouldnt need to know any more than you would as a reseller.

Go dedicated when you have 3 times the cost of the server, as your 30 day revenue. Also ded servers just don't run themselves. You'll need 24x7 staffing, for emergency reboots, updates etc. Don't think of a server as just the hardware/network. Think of the human componant too, and factor that into your cashflow.

Not if you have fully managed servers and your provider is monitoring them.

Depends on what folks define as "fully managed". I know a lot of ded server providers have very differring viewpoints on that definition. It's more a marketing phrase, these days, than anything, IMO.

In that case you need to ask your provider what exactly they will and wont do.
